Wow! You got Master and Commander and read it already? Got it Friday. 3 days' perfect to read a book. Anything more and it keeps going and going, a chapter every now and then, and it's dreadful to finish it. I've got 3 books started like that that I'm struggling to finish because if I don't have the time to devour it, I can't keep the fact and names straight and the passionate tension, if you see what I mean ^^ (I had friday and thursday afternoon off from work, it helped)
The book is written in a very high register, many native speakers of English have thrown in the towel on it. Yeah, I'm feeling a bit bad, because I'm sure I missed out a lot of things, and misunderstood plenty of the funny stuff too. At least I got the funnies that were in French ^^
Did it bother you at all that they were fighting the French? Though O'Brian's characterization of the French isn't negative at all. Oh, absolutly not. Not from the British and Irish. You can't begrudge them their nationnal sport, the poor sods have so little fun to have in their countries. We have decent cooking, they mock us. It's part of the balance of the universe
I must defend the seeming lack of plot because there are 19 more books in the series--each novel is less a novel than a chapter. Oh the complexity. I see. That does make me want to read more soon ^^
Have fun to your Hannukah parties and I hope your son (I think ?) holds up well ^^
