Yeah, the opening definitly reminds of both Samurai Champloo and Cowboy Bebop. In terms of content I'd compare it more to Cowboy Bebop than to Samurai Champloo because it's more driven by the characters and the story, and less by stylistic riffs (even though it's got a certain stylistic appeal). I find Hana's character design very Ghibli Studio like, too, and apparently some of the people who work on this series did use to work for Ghibli :)
Michiko's gorgeous, and certainly shows to great effect her body, yet the storytelling is such that I never feel like the 'camera' objectifies or lingers on her only for the sake of fanservice. Something which I greatly appreciate.
