First! Did I ever got around to plugging
comics_reviews_etc and
comicsmod? Comics_reviews_etc, modded by the lovely
bethbethbeth is a community for discussions and reviews of comics issues for people craving meta and discussions (where has all the meta gone?); and comicsmod is a comics anon meme. They both look pretty neat!!
Second, short meta/rant I wrote on tumblr about the events regarding Daken at the end of Remender's Uncanny X-Force
I’m still really pissed off about Daken’s death. It’s not the fact he died in itself. It’s the way it was done. By which I mean: I don’t think it was heartbreaking or anything. I think it was crappy and OOC and disgusting in its moral implication.
First it’s a fridging. It’s sacrificing a queer and biracial character for the sake of creating Wolverine’s manpain. And Wolverine is a character who already had such a ridiculous amount of dead character of colour so he can get manpain.
Second, the way it was written was doing its best to erase those aspects of the character. We see fantasy images of a would be life that take place in an stereotypically American context, and involves Daken taking a girl to a prom (with nothing addressing his attraction to men as well). Not only is it erasure, but since those are “idealised” visions, they put forward the idea that a “fixed”, not “evil” Daken would have a different sexual orientation and a different cultural background. With a character as close as the Depraved Bisexual as Daken is, that has some really dodgy implications.
Third, in a series that had been all about how assassinating people does not help things out and problematising such things, it ends up with the reveal that Wolverine had been told by his future self that if he didn’t do it, Daken would murder the children of the school - thus absolving him of murder. It’s repugnant.
Fourth, there’s a sheer amount of out of characterisation and undermining of Daken’s agency. Daken as written by Remender is a shallow caricature that is only used to thrust the plot without much thought given to who he is or how he usually behaves. He’s way more direct and open about his father issues than Daken ever is in previous series. He’s also shown as easily manipulated by Sabertooth - despite Daken supposedly being a very skilled manipulator himself! And which further undermines his agency in favour of a white dude. And he has very vague motives for what he does, being only explainable as a sheer suicide wish because that’s just how contrived the plotting was.
And the thing is. Daken used to have his own on going. An on going about a queer, biracial, mostly evil character. How often has Marvel had done anything like that? Seriously how many other queer Marvel characters have had their solo on going? There might be some, but I can’t think of any (not counting Deadpool, which isn’t officially considered as queer afaik despite being written as such beyond plausible deniability). And they’ve sacrificed that for the sake of a crappy, contrived storyline in which Logan is like, really sad that he had to kill his son instead of giving him the middle class suburban North American and all straight and white lifestyle that he’d always wanted to.
Give me a break.
And third, I wrote a review for the first six issues of All New X-Men over on
