Entropy and Books

My computer's down. Again. Fuck that, anytime yo fix any one thing, another thing breaks down. Entropy's a bitch. Expect me to be scarce online.

Been reading Last Argument of King. 'Tis pretty good so far.

Finished reading Shadowplay right before which was painfully slow and sometimes unintentionnaly funny; but yeah, Tad Williams still can write Fairies - if it's the only thing he can write. Got quite a disturbing trend of female victimization to this book though, I think it's intentionnal but it still comes out as disturbing. Then again, maybe I've just become more sensitive to this things.

Unfortunately, it's like that sometimes.

That's what our year so far has been like, too. Bummer about the computer -- hope you get it working soon again.

I didn't realize Tad Williams had another fantasy trilogy going. Doesn't sound like you thought it was that great... How would you say it compares to Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn?

Well, looks like I'll have to buy a new computer, actually.

He also wrote a standalone, which is probably the best thing of his I read since standaloneness forced him to be focussed and concise instead of all over the place and rambly.

I'd say Shadowmarch and Shadowplay are about the same quality as MS&T, although I might have a more bad than should be opinion of MS&T due to the french translation which cut English volumes in several ones, read at monthes of interval, which makes a slow and badly paced plot even worse to follow.

Waiting until this trilogy is finished before reading it, but the signs aren't good. Liked MS&T up until the ending and thought Otherland was pretty good (although waaaay overlong), but this trilogy has gotten some seriously bad reviews.

Abercrombie > Williams, for sure ;-)

Sorry to hear about your computer issues!

I never finished Otherland, but yeah, it did have some nice ideas :) I have very few memories of MST (fun fact : this is the acronym for STD in French ^^) beyond "nice fairies, pacing problems, most characters boring, plot goes mostly nowhere", which is very similar to my thoughts of Shadowmarch&play.

You need to read some John Ringo. ;-)

That's cold, man. What has etrangere ever done to you to deserve such a horrible fate?

OH DEATH-DEALING SHRIMP NO!

as a matter of fact I was reading the link from your post about John Ringo when my computer broke down. Yes, John Ringo KILLED MY COMPUTER!! I think I'll never read anything linked to this person ever again.
