Spring anime season

After the dreadful winter season, we're back to a bunch of shows that seem much more appealing.

House of the Fives Leaves / Sayai-ya Goyou: Adapted from a manga I'm already liking a fair deal, and animated by Manglobe, so it's pretty much a shoe-in. Judging from the first episode, it's even more slashy than the manga already pretty slashy base XD I love the way the animation transcribe the art style and the overall atmosphere. Don't expect flashy fight scene from the premise, though, it's much more about the characters interplay and the gritty and complicated atmosphere than that sort of stuff, despite the historical Japan and samurai lead premise.

Hakouaki - Shinsengumi Kitan: On the one hand, historical series, shinsengumi, and supernatural plot? yay! On the other hand, it's a reverse harem series, and one adapted from a visual novel at that (something with which I've had almost nothing but bad experience). The again the show is so pretty I might just watch the pleasure of the gorgeous animation even if the plot turns out dull. Really gorgeous animation, work on light and bishounens there. So far, so good, the first two episodes have had enough plots to intrigue me.

Angel Beats!: The afterlife is a highschool and a group of student are fighting 'Angel', the head of the student council who has superpowers and tries to make people pass on. I really wasn't expecting to follow this one, but when I watched the first episode because everyone on RPG.net was saying it was great, I was really grabbed. Love the fast pacing and the mix of humour and action, even though the comedy and the drama sometimes feel a bit forced. Very decent production value too, even if the character design is a bit boring.

Uragiri wa Boku no Namae wo Shitteiru / Uraboku: Your gothic horror shounen ai series. It looks fairly cliché - but what a delightful list of clichés those are XD - but isn't too bad so far; and in any case, easily earns itself a place as a guilty pleasure ^_^

Senkou no Night Raid: Interesting premise and setting (Shanghai in the 30's with ESP using spy action); but I wasn't that impressed by the first episode and I'm a bit leery of the potential for it to be very offensive if the creators aren't careful. So i'm still undecided on whether I'll follow this one.

RAINBOW: Despite the interesting premise (a group of juvenile convicts in 50's Japan), the direction is way too overstated and sentimental to make it work with such an already dark and heavy subject; making it turn fairly silly and caricaturing. A shame, I've already dropped it as a result.

ETA:
Arakawa Under the Bridge: I dunno if I burnt out on Shaft direction style or something, but watching the first ep of this only triggered annoyance and not a whiff of laughter. I'll pass.

Giant Killing: Didn't make it through the first episode. It might be good, but soccer really isn't my thing. Now I know.

And of course I'm still following on FMA Brotherhood, Durarara!! and on Katanagari.

What are you guys watching? Did I miss anything interresting this season?

Those were pretty much my thoughts on Senkou no Night Raid. I want really badly to like the show, but I'm soooo worried about where they plan on taking it. They did actually touch on the really complicated political background a bit, which gave me a little hope, but I am honestly not expecting good things... (And the VAs attempts at pronouncing Chinese were laughably bad -- they got native speakers for the minor characters, but serious suspension of disbelief involved when I watched them stroll through the camp without anyone suspecting a thing.)

I'm planning to hunt down subs for Yojou-han Shinwa Taikei, which surprisingly already got licensed. Have you seen Kaiba? Same director, so I have my hopes up.

Also, Giant Killing is a sports anime about football (European) that actually really impressed me with the first episode despite sports shows not usually being my cup of tea. It's interesting because the protagonist is not actually a player himself this time (ex-player I think) -- but a manager. Love the designs/art style... Animation looks like they did some motion capture sort of thing or other cg type stuff, not sure but it looks interesting.

Yeah, I already saw a Chinese American on a forum who is unhappy with the presentation of some stuff; so yeah :(
And if they can't get someone to speak good Chinese they shouldn't have them try it x_x I don't speak a word of Chinese and it was still painful on the ears.

Haha, I knew there was something else I was interested in this season, but I forgot what it was since the first ep hasn't been broadcast yet (I think?). I haven't seen Kaiba yet, but it's on my to-watch-list ^_^

I actually tried watching Giant Killing's first ep based on good reviews, but I couldn't make it through it. I think I'm definitely not into soccer anime, no matter how good they may be XD Burnt out from Captain Tsubasa or something.

Must also add Arakawa to the list as something I tried out ad gave up at the first ep >_> careless posting this was.

I remember the first ep was supposed to come out sometime this week, but I need to check again. (Kaiba is gooood. One of the most original shows in the last few years.)

I went into Giant Killing with very low expectations, which is probably why I was so impressed. XD I'm not watching all that much this season, so it was a pleasant find for me.

Oh, Arakawa. I keep looking at it and wanting to check it out but hesitating. What didn't you like about it? eta: oh nm, saw your edit. XD

It's always nice to be surprised! That's what i got with Angel Beats! myself ^^

About Arakawa, I think I went from XD about Zetsubou Sensei to :) about Bakemonogatori to :| about Arakawa all in the space of one year. All the direction gimmicks make me twitch now. Sad.

I think you mentioned all the ones I'm following or going to. Haven't checked House of the Five Leaves yet but it looks interesting. I'm already watching Durarara!, I'm downloading Katanagatari but I'm three episodes behind, and I did like Arakawa Under the Bridge. The one about the Shinsengumi I might check it out if I hear good things about it when it ends -I do admit that after reading some Kaze Hikaru, any shoujo bishification of Shinsengumi + random girl lead creeps me out a bit.

creep you out? why? Is Kaze Hikaru very bad? or good?

Well, I didn't read the whole thing and now it's all fuzzy because I read several volumes in a row, so I can't attest on the good/badness. I sort of liked the few I read at the time. However, then I saw spoilers about the romantic development and I didn't like the pairing it was leading to, so I just... stopped reading or something.

But it's more like lately, I've noticed that most stories about Shinsengumi follow a formula of taking the POV of a made-up character and have him/her interact with the group and become their buddy. So, I keep wondering when it's a historical self-insert and when it's not. I'd say that in an otome visual novel, self-inserting to hook up with usually Okita because of the pretty any of them must be pretty much the point, perhaps? I wouldn't mind if the POV was from someone who IS a Shinsengumi, and they make up a girlfriend/boyfriend/BFF of whoever as a minor character in a subplot, but this sort of character is always the main one. This is what creeps me out. I want to know the most about the Shinsengumi themselves, not some random teen they befriend.

aaaaah, I see. I could see that. Well at least Peacemaker Kurogane had that vibe, and that's the big Shinsengumi anime I know of before this one.

well yes. At least, make a character that allow the audience to self insert.

I was recced a Shinsengumi anime OAV recently. After I watch it I'll tell you if it had self inserts in it. Otherwise, there's a manga without one, but I don't think it was translated in English, no clue about in Spanish, but it was called Hinata no Okami.

I was also including Peacemaker, yeah. I haven't watched/read that one yet because of problems getting it, not dislike of the premise. But it's true that Shinsengumi in shoujo sets up alarms more than Shinsengumi shounen. And it's not only a RPF-Sue kind of alarm, I don't doubt they warp/embellish what they know about the guys to a bishounen ideal which is the thing that turns me off the most, even more than Random New Teen. Not only I don't get them as focus, but they might be OOC to get them to hang out with the lead.

...man, this came out kind of bitter! I assure you I'm not annoyed, just kinda tired. I love butchery of historical figures in manganime a lot, but I cannot comprehend why would you go and create a character to romance a guy who's been dead for years.

I'm mostly following doramas, actually.
(In fact, I'm going into LET'S DOWNLOAD mode right now.)

haha, good to know.

I keep trying to get into drama, but episodes are just too long for me. I want snappier stuff. I'm still trying to finish the series I started wayyyyy back then.

Oh, I suck at following doramas. I mean, I still haven't watched Arashi's 2009 doramas. XD SO THIS SEASON WILL BE THE SEASON I actually watch them.
Plus they're on a roll and KimuTaku dorama hell yes.

Which series was it? XD

HAHAHAHA I'm glad I'm not the only one who has trouble with this.

BOSS, Capital Scandal, City Hall. I also have Damo and Jumong queued in for whenever I finish one of those!

And I have a MORAL DUTY as an Arashi fan to watch their shows, but really. .P

Oooh, I wanted to see BOSS due to Erika Toda but failed to even download.

lol
see, this is what I don't get about the drama watching culture, the way it revolves around being fan of actors / bands. I just don't work that way.

BOSS is okay, the mystery aren't great, but the chemistry of the team is what makes the appeal of the show.

Basically, it's the other way around. Idol culture revolves around watching them in everything and if you follow more than one band - like me -, you have at least three doramas to watch this season only. So non-idol doramas have to be extremely good to justify the time spent watching them and not, say, a random Arashi variety show. (Arashi has the most epic canon ever and I'm counting Doctor who, Gundam and Macross there. :P)
There are people who just watch doramas for the doramas and they hate idols, as a rule. XD

Oh, cool.

Where can I find these people?

D-Addicts, mostly. I don't go there often, but it seems to be more about the doramas than the idols.

I do feel slightly offended, though. :P

Thanks! *googles D-Addicts*

I'm sorry,I really can't get into idol fannishness, that's just not my sort of stuff and never was. That doesn't mean i think you're wrong for liking it! If you do, more power to you! But if I want to find dramas I'm going to like and discuss those dramas in the way that I like, I need to find people who are like me and are into stories, not idols!!

[personal profile] solesakuma 2010-04-20 07:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Their recs threads are usually good, particularly for older doramas. But I only use the discussion threads to see if the dorama is any good, so I have no idea about that side of the forum.

Well, that's the point. One of the last doramas I saw and adored was Ryuusei no kizuna (crimes! love! family!). It starred Nino of Arashi, yes, but even when I talked about it with my JE flist... we talked mostly about the plot or the characters.
I mean, idol doramas happen to be the kind of stories I like most times - romance or slice of life, or WTF comedy - but if there's a drama that seems interesting and has no idols in it, yeah, I'll watch even if JE dramas have priority. And most of my flist does the same.
