and something that got me thinking re: a comment further up on the page... for me, personally, it doesn't even matter whether these particular stories are true or not. as human beings, don't we all relate to the emotion in them? somewhere, amongst the thousands upon thousands of casualties and tragedies caused by this disaster, many people have undoubtedly done a lot of amazing and selfless things. I guess it doesn't really matter to me whether these eleven stories actually number among them... they represent them. :|
I admit I tend to look at a true story in a different way than I do a fictional way, especially if it happened (relatively) recently. The fact that they involved real people means that the respect I owe those people influence how I view the stories. It's not just an artefact, it's a part of their soul.
I'm also very suspicious of "inspired by a true story" adaptations because that often feel very disrespectful to me.
But in terms of being a true testimony of humanity, you're absolutely right. True doesn't have to be real to be true, in a way.
