fandoms rambling

1. A quizz

Who is your inner CLAMP character?
created with QuizFarm.com
You scored as Seishirou

You are like Seishirou Sakurazuka from Tokyo Babylon and X. Um... that's scary. People who do not know you very well may very well think that you are a kind and gentle soul - someone who loves animals and cares about the environment. But really, you probably couldn't care less. Your true nature is that you are a bit obsessive and antisocial. And maybe a bit of a stalker. And all of this would be a bad thing... if you weren't so damn cool.

*dies laughing* I didn't do it on purpose, I swear!!

I've been in a bit more of a CLAMP-reading mood lately. Partially thanks to [livejournal.com profile] a_white_rain ♥ and now to [livejournal.com profile] mithrigil whom I've just discovered is a terifyingly good writer. Kinda make me want to see what else I've missed. Also, while reading Hikago (went on an archive binge there... ^^;; it's a lovely fandom to do that with because there's a lot of reclists everywhere, something I'd really missed when I was just getting into Avatar.), I saw that [livejournal.com profile] ontogenesis also wrote a lot of Kurogane/Fai fics and I'm wondering if it's worth catching up with scanlations in order to read them (pro:I hate being spoiled and I like the pairing, con:I don't enjoy reading manga on a computer screen much)
It also makes me want to start writing again and maybe finish all those WIPs *sighs*

2. I have not being good about reading Avatar fics, however :( and now I'm scared of spoilers and annoyed at the number of people who aren't careful about them. Hopely the rewatch is going to be fun; well I know it will be, it's Avatar ♥, but discussing it will be. Although it's already so much riddled with shipping wars I kinda want to scream and run away.

3. I've been thinking about femslash pairing since [livejournal.com profile] bitterfig asked me for my top five f/f couples; and you know, I had some, but I kinda feel like I don't have any big femslash OTP like I do with maleslash and het (and genderfucked); and I'd like to! I'd love for a femslash pairing to be my main interest in at least one fandom. The closest thing I have is Blackcest which is a whole category of its own being 'cestuous. Utena would be the closest other opportunity, but I don't really like Utena/Anthy, and I like Juri/Shiori more as part of a triangle. Then there's Kushiel's trilogy which has a lot of potential, but I just don't feel like looking up fics for that fandom.

So, I'm asking for recs from my flist :) Can you think of a fandom with a big f/f ship which I may love?

I'm pretty open about media, although I tend to prefer stuff that are read (books and graphic novels) slightly better than stuff that are watched (TV series, movies and anime) - err, no video game though; and my kinks go to antagonistic pairings, mindfuck, eros/thanatos, etc. I think I tend to prefer canon or heavily subtextual pairings to fanon ones, but I certainly have nothing against crackpairings and there's always exceptions! Otherwise, you know, SFF, symbolism and mythology rock my world :)

[identity profile] lodessa.livejournal.com 2008-04-24 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I think my favorite femslash pairing is Buffy/Faith.

I always feel bad for not being more into femslash in general though.

[identity profile] etrangere.livejournal.com 2008-04-24 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I can see the appeal in them. If I hadn't gone so disgusted of BtVS after S7 I would hunt fics for them...

hahahaha, yeah me too, sometimes. Especially since I do like femslash, both writing and reading it. But finding a fandom with two awesome female characters who have the right kind of dynamic is difficult.

[identity profile] lodessa.livejournal.com 2008-04-24 06:58 pm (UTC)(link)
It is really hard.

They have the advantage of having both a connection and a huge divide so that it doesn't fall into either of the categories that fics in general but especially femslash ones fall into too often:

1) LOOK they are GIRLS they are PRETTY and SOFT and GENTLE.

2) LOOK they are GIRLS they are CATTY and MANIPULATIVE.

Babylon 5 has some pretty canon antogonistic femslash, but sadly it gets killed way too early on and you are looking for book not TV show fandoms.

If you find a good book fandom for interesting femslash share the wealth because I am looking both to get more into book fandoms and to get more into femslash.
ext_2023: (Default)

[identity profile] etrangere.livejournal.com 2008-04-24 07:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I really do need to watch B5 some day, since I hear such great things about it! :)

I said i prefered not, but I'm open to TV shows too. Getting killed early, though :(

Good femslash is hard to find in books :( apart from Kushiel, I don't see any. There's a minor character (who is awesome) in Kushner's Fall of Kings; and Mary Gentle's Book of Ash has one sadly one-sided love.

[identity profile] lodessa.livejournal.com 2008-04-24 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)
it is really good. I am still finishing season 4 (of 5) but it is totally worthwhile so far. And it's nice because it was all planned out ahead of time and not haphazardly based on ratings.

There's definitely enough for fandom activity, but yeah :(.

I think there's this problematic tendency to only have book femslash when it is the focus of the novel, instead of it just being part of the story.

Hum, what do you mean?

[identity profile] lodessa.livejournal.com 2008-04-24 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Well there are books like the Sarah Waters ones... that are about lesbianism, but it seems to be an all or nothing situation, and I like subtext more than text when it comes to ships.
ext_2023: (Default)

[identity profile] etrangere.livejournal.com 2008-04-24 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
oh, I see. (well apart from knowing nothing of Sarah Waters) I like both subtext and text-text for this kind of things. I just depend of the dynamic, I like it more when it adversatial, and somewhat dysfunctionnal, or at least with some tension and power issues, you know? And sometimes I get the impression that a lot of big femslash pairing are all cuddles and sweetness which bore me horribly :)

You might like some Japanese yuri manga, I think a lot of them work more for the subtext than as an all out ship.

[identity profile] lodessa.livejournal.com 2008-04-24 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Sarah Waters writes period piece lesbianism novels (mostly Victorian). The one I've read, Affinity was very good.

I like canon ships, but for fannish activity subtextual ones tend to be more compelling for some reason... perhaps because there is more to work out.

And yes, the sugar and spice aspect of most femslash totally turns me off of it.

Hmmm, I've been getting more into graphic novel thing again so that sounds intriguing.

[identity profile] mithrigil.livejournal.com 2008-04-24 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
re: 1, ::blush::

re: 3, since I have a lot of video game fandoms, most of the f/f I know comes out of that. Agrias/Ovelia (Final Fantasy Tactics) is a solid lady knight and her conflicted/oblivious princess pairing, in the way of Rose of Versailles (a manga you might also enjoy). Another of my favorites, also from a game, is Jinana/Argilla in Digital Devil Saga, which is rather visceral and powerful and sad.

--eep, just noticed the no VG comment. Sorry.

*laughs* Like most French girls of my generation, I grew up with the Rose of Versailles anime! I certainly loved it at the time, oh, the drama!

Sadly I don't play videogames, mostly because I find they're a big time sucker (not to mention expensive), and I only have so much time for reading, discussing online and writing which are my priority :(
solesakuma: (Default)

[personal profile] solesakuma 2008-04-24 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Hm, random question: what do French people think of Rose of Versailles? I mean, I adore that anime even I didn't grow up on it, I grew up on Candy Candy instead, but I've always wondered...
And yeah, THERE'S SO MUCH DRAMA! It's so over the top that even if too much angst tends to bore me I love it.
ext_2023: (Default)

[identity profile] etrangere.livejournal.com 2008-04-24 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
We loved it! We grew up with Candy Candy as well of course! Lots of anime. I liked Rose of Versaille betters than Candy; though, because it had swashbuckling and crossdressing and lots of strong women (okay, it also had some naive idiotic women, too) and Oscar was such a great, strong willed heroine.

It was pretty much drama!drama!drama! but it was hilarious and historical and way less cheesy than, say, Saint Seya. Actually I also loved Saint Seya so I might actually love cheesy over the top drama :)

[personal profile] solesakuma 2008-04-25 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Weird enough, I'm seven years younger than you. XP [Yeah, we got 80's anime in th 90's. XP]
I hated Candy XDDDDD.

Saint Seiya is just as an important part of my childhood as Queen. My boy cousins were fans. XP

Someday I need to make a nostalgy post about all those old anime series I adored. So many of them, and so much overthetopdramaness! :)

[identity profile] after-nightfall.livejournal.com 2008-04-25 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I wrote an Oscar/Rosalie fic once upon a time... but that one's waaaaay too easy. Also, canon.

[identity profile] keelieinblack.livejournal.com 2008-04-24 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
...I'd rec Oniisama e, but I don't know how you feel about anime/manga that are from that time period (1970s), and the fandom is quite tiny--and while there are fansubs, but I don't know how easy they'd be to get ahold of, and only a couple volumes of the manga have been scanlated in English. It has some heavy f/f subtext, though, as well as seriously twisted relationships and tragic, screwed-up characters.

Why is is so hard to think of femslashy books? I know they exist!
ext_2023: (Default)

[identity profile] etrangere.livejournal.com 2008-04-24 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
It does sound interesting, and it wouldn't be the first time I read/watch a manga/anime from that time period (although at that time I was much younger myself XD)

Tiny fandoms aren't too bad as long as they're regularly active and well organized! getting ahold of it might be the hard part, hmm...

Why is is so hard to think of femslashy books? I know they exist!
Do they? Where?!

[identity profile] keelieinblack.livejournal.com 2008-04-24 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
XD Hee, I saw you mention Rose of Versailles--the animation definitely has that same style and 'feel'. There's a torrent for the English fansubs of the anime (under the title Brother, Dear Brother) out there, if you can use Bittorrent.

Do they? Where?!

If I find any, I'll let you know--maybe I need to stare at my bookshelves for a bit when I get home...
ext_2023: (Default)

[identity profile] etrangere.livejournal.com 2008-04-24 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! I'll use bittorrent when I get home then!

[identity profile] after-nightfall.livejournal.com 2008-04-25 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, looks like I'll be spamming your LJ today. :-) Oniisama e is from the same author as Rose of Versailles (Riyoko Ikeda) and it contains really large amounts of girl draaaaama, but also crossdressing, hero worship femslash and mindfuck incest femslash. I think you might like it. :-)
ext_2023: (Default)

[identity profile] etrangere.livejournal.com 2008-04-27 11:10 am (UTC)(link)
Another point in favour of Oniisama then :) Thanks for the rec!

Man, I serioiusly need to catch up on Tsubasa just so I could read all the yummy Kurogane/Fai fics out there. Bad enough I got slightly spoiled by accident. XD

I plan to get into Avatar soon, hopefully. Though I worry about the Fen, if they're anywhere near crazy as the Naruto or Bleach Fen are. But right now Bones is eating my brains...XD

I can't outright think of any fandoms... Maybe Gakuen Alice? Since Mikan & Hotaru are BFFs (in their own twisted way) and i have seen some art of a cutesy date. But they're children so yeah... There's a small comm for the Bones fandom with the two main female charas. Very sexy and sweet. Not really a F/F slasher so I don't outright notice pairings as I'm now beginning to do with m/m in shows. XD
ext_2023: (Default)

[identity profile] etrangere.livejournal.com 2008-04-24 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I got spoiled a lot for Tsubasa, it kind of pisses me off, but I'm almost beyond the part I had been spoiled about.

Avatar is a lovely show, definitly. The fandom's pretty bad but you do have some nice and smart people - it's just you need to work to find 'em.

I'm not big into children shipping yeah (I find it difficult enough in Avatar)... as for Bones, I'm not very much into "sweet" pairing, so dunno. But thanks for mentionning them, I'll have to look it up.

[identity profile] luminaire.livejournal.com 2008-04-24 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I've found myself dipping back into CLAMP as well, thanks to [livejournal.com profile] mithrigil. Her fics are just wow.

Dittoing the lack of a femslash OTP. I don't know if you've read "Fall On Your Knees", but it has one of my favorite f/f ships. I have no idea if there's any fandom for it though. :(
ext_2023: (Default)

[identity profile] etrangere.livejournal.com 2008-04-24 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, yes, they are!!!

What kind of story is "Fall of your knees"? Book, movie, manga?

[identity profile] luminaire.livejournal.com 2008-04-24 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a book. The story is set around the turn of the century and focuses on four sisters. I'm generally not into those types of stories, and I know you asked for SFF, but it was a surprisingly good read. The f/f storyline doesn't really happen until the end of the book, but it was the first female ship I can recall really piquing me. There's also incest and gender-switching and the two girls start off at odds with each other. I liked it. ^^;
ext_2023: (Default)

[identity profile] etrangere.livejournal.com 2008-04-24 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
sounds interesting, I'll have to look it up even if it's a bit different from what I usually read.
solesakuma: (Default)

[personal profile] solesakuma 2008-04-24 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Hm, I think my only femslash OTP is Tomoyo/Mei Ling. Well, now I've discovered Azula/Ty Lee because I was suddenly writing it but...
ext_2023: (Default)

[identity profile] etrangere.livejournal.com 2008-04-24 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd ship Tomoyo/Mei Ling if I didn't ship Tomoyo with Nokoru and Mei Ling with Hokuto ;)

I do like Azula/Ty Lee, but on small dose, not as an OTP, y'know.
solesakuma: (Default)

[personal profile] solesakuma 2008-04-25 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
XDDDDD

Me either, that's why I'm surprised I ended up writing them!

[personal profile] rebbe 2008-04-24 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I dunno, I'm not really that huge on femmeslash myself. The only thing I can think of, really, is Avatar, 'cause there's lots of interesting girls to slash in that.
ext_2023: (dance with me)

[identity profile] etrangere.livejournal.com 2008-04-24 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a bit intrigued by Katara/Toph and Azula/Ty Lee myself, but between their age and the fact I'm not very shippy about Avatar, they don't really rate as OTP.

[identity profile] indigestible.livejournal.com 2008-04-25 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Umm I like BSG for f/f, but since you already watch that it doesn't really count. I also like f/f in Veronica Mars and Buffy, but I wouldn't say that Veronica Mars is actually all that femmeslash-filled, and again, you've already seen Buffy. So I guess I have no useful suggestions. (Other than to hop aboard the Cylon f/f/f love train.)
ext_2023: (Default)

[identity profile] etrangere.livejournal.com 2008-04-25 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Which pairing in BSG? Six/Three? Six/Eight? Six/Six/Six?

I never watched Veronica... hmmmm

[identity profile] indigestible.livejournal.com 2008-04-25 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
All of the above. I've also got a soft spot for Kara/Kat. And as a pet crack theory: I think Ellen and Six would have been amazing together. Although with recent developments (I assume you're up to date with season 4, if not skip this next bit), I'm kind of pulling for a 6/8/3 lovefest.
ext_2023: (kendra)

[identity profile] etrangere.livejournal.com 2008-04-25 09:48 am (UTC)(link)
I am interested in Kara/Kat! Also Kara/Kendra... These women are hot and have awesome chemistry. But I haven't found fics with them yet. I do adore Ellen but a fic shipping her with Six would have to be very convincing lol Cylon ships, weirdly enough, do not interest me so much, despite the canoniness of 6/3.

Actually between Passover celebrations and teeth removal, I haven't got the time to watch Ties That Bind yet.

[identity profile] indigestible.livejournal.com 2008-04-25 02:03 pm (UTC)(link)
To be believable (ahaha), Ellen would probably have to be in the dark about Six being a cylon, which probably pushes it pre-series. Hey, there was always some mystery about how, exactly, Ellen survived the initial attack . . .

What can I say, the cylons have always been the best part of the show for me. If the fleet was destroyed and the show was all cylons all the time, I wouldn't complain. (Well, I'd miss Kara and Adama.)

[identity profile] curtana.livejournal.com 2008-04-25 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
The John Varley SF series Titan, Wizard, and Demon (aka the Gaea Trilogy) has some nice female pairings/potential pairings, especially Gaby and Cirocco. They're also quite excellent books in general :) His later works (well, Steel Beach and Golden Globe, I haven't read the others) also have some interesting genderfuck stuff, with an SF setting where sex changes are like minor day surgery and some characters switch sex on a regular basis. I have never seen any fic for them, but there really ought to be some if there isn't! I haven't actually looked, mind you...it may be out there, though they're a bit older books.

And, like someone else said, B5. Ivanova and anyone, dude, but especially Ivanova/Talia. Yes, the plotline gets cut a bit short, but it's definitely canon, and fixing the occasional problems with canon plot is part of what fic's for, right? ;)
ext_2023: (Default)

[identity profile] etrangere.livejournal.com 2008-04-25 09:50 am (UTC)(link)
Oooooh, I've read Titan, but I keep putting the others back for years (my bad) so they're on my unendng pile of books to be read. Lots of people recced them to me ^^

I do love SF genderfuck a lot!

B5 it is then...

[identity profile] curtana.livejournal.com 2008-04-25 12:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought of some others after I went to bed last night, and these I know there's fic for!

Kill Bill, if you don't mind violence - no explicit pairings, but just so many kick-ass women that f/f fic is inevitable ;)

Terry Pratchett's Monstrous Regiment. It's part of the huge Discworld series, but it's very stand-alone, so if you haven't read any of the others you'll still be able to follow it. I hope I'm not giving too much of the plot away to say that there are manymany possibilities for female pairings, including one (possibly two, depending on interpretation) that are canonical. I keep meaning to write a Polly/Maladict story, and I know there's an LJ comm for fic just for that book in particular.

[identity profile] cloud-wolf.livejournal.com 2008-04-26 01:32 pm (UTC)(link)
*perks up* Sorry, where is this comm? I'd love to read fic for Monstrous Regiment.

[identity profile] curtana.livejournal.com 2008-04-26 01:36 pm (UTC)(link)
[livejournal.com profile] cheesemongers! They're doing a group read at the moment, so you have to scroll back a ways to find the fic, but there's a good amount there.
ext_2023: (Default)

[identity profile] etrangere.livejournal.com 2008-04-27 11:09 am (UTC)(link)
Ooooh, Kill Bill's a good idea. I do love those women :)

I'm not crazy about Pratchett - got a thousand books to catch up before reaching Monstrous Regiment - but I'll keep this one in mind, thank you for the suggestion :)
