reading ADWD part 3

Up to p.350 / Tyrion's seven chapter, not included.

Jon IV
"You haggle like a crone with a coldfish, Lord Snow. Did Ned Stark father you on some fishwife?"
I SEE STANNIS SUBSCRIBES TO THE BRAND NEW JON SNOW'S POTENTIAL MOTHER THEORY. HE MUST HAVE GOTTEN IT FROM DAVOS VIA THE POWER OF LOVE TELEPATHY! XD

"The map is not the land, my father often said."
OMG Ned Stark was Alfred Korzybski!!! Who'd have known? XD

Also it's nice seeing Jon showing he can be smart.

Tyrion V
Haha, Aegon it is... or the mummer dragon? Mummer dragon would fit well; since I'd never expect Aegon to really show up this way, this late.

Davos III
Good old Freys. Always knowing how to best make friends.

Theon II
aznscehrfezhfnieigbeivbrigvbreuigh did someone show GRRM the darkest pit of dark kinky non con fanfics (and then that's why he's so against them?), and then he decided to take ideas from them and to outdo them in creepiness? because holy motherfucking shit. o_o

I guess it's another one for the "my fandom has.... and it's canon" list.

o_o

Jon V
Women on the Wall! Women on the Wall! :D

Tyrion VI

selfpityselfpityselfpityselfpity

and then he met a bear. (a bear! a bear! and a maiden fair!)

(the cliffhangers are so cute)

Daenarys IV
Martin does love his romance novels clichés, doesn't he?

Also I'm starting to wonder how well you could do a classic reverse harem set up with Daenarys and her would be suitors (whenever the rest of them arrive, hopefully in this book). I hope there'll be fanart of them all bishied up XD

Griff I
Aww poor guy. Just a little talk with Tyrion and his prince is already turning against his will.

Quentyn
Continues being adorable. And rather lucky I guess...

Asha I
WTF. Seriously someone needs to keep Martin away from the bad porn. It has a terrible influence on him.

Asha means to use Theon to cancel kingsmoot, I presume. Would that work? Hm. As long as she rescues Theon, it'll make me happy anyway. Well if she survives.

Asha vs Stannis (in a discussion) : that should be hilarious.

I think I'm going to go sleep now. More spam tomorrow.

I'm still holding out Aegon as a mummer's dragon. It's too late in the game. He somehow doesn't...connect with me as Aegon. But I liked him and Tyrion playing that game.

Narratively speaking, that's what would make the most sense. It's not like he's been introduced with much interesting personality. He's not a player; he's a prop.

[identity profile] twistedsheets10.livejournal.com 2011-07-13 01:06 pm (UTC)(link)
True. He's just so...lifeless.

That actually surprised me, GRRM pulling that out. I never expected that theory to hold true.

But it's Griff who makes me think that Aegon might be for real with all his sadness about Rhaegar.

Connington definitely genuinely believes he is Aegon. Whether or not he's right or he was fouled by Varys&Illaryo though...

I saw someone on tumblr theorizing that Tyrion's self-pity paranoid spiral/daddy issues are supposed to mirror Cersei's paranoid spiral/daddy issues and we aren't supposed to be liking him. I really hope that's true, because that would be fun.

I still like Quentyn too. He seems all calm and sensible.

I really want Dany to have like five husbands and utterly shock Westeros with her wanton ways. XD

on Tyrion - that might actually make a bit of sense. Though well... will the fanboys realise it?

I would totally root for Dany going for the harem end!

Yup, I think Tyrion is deliberately being shown up in ADWD. His attitude so far can be summed up as: "Boo-hoo, I'm a dwarf, everyone hates me. Though I also get to live in totally awesome castle with tons of books and a great horse and servants and never having to work a day in my life. But my life still sucks!"

In think in ADWD GRRM is giving Tyrion a bit of a wake-up call. Considering the alternative was to have him musing on getting drunk, killing his father and Tysha for 1,000 pages on end, I think this may have been the better choicce.

But that's exactly what we've got so far! :p (well minus the 1,000 pages)

You're past the bit where Connington throws his alcohol overboard though, right? So at least that's taken care of :-P

I think thematically the second half of Tyrion's story is stronger than the first, and you're almost there now. Interesting to see what you make of it!

Let's not forget the cruelty of being forbidden to visit prostitutes or walk on hands.

(If I were not firmly in Tywin is my fav. Lannister camp, I'd have joined after this book. It's like... pages upon pages of Tywin being more awesome from beyond the grave than the living ones.)

Oh, I so very much hope that's the case!

Also, the out-of-control drinking.

I really want Asha to rescue Theon. But TBH, putting myself in Theon's mindset I kind of could see him killing himself.

I was always a Tyrion fan, though I definitely acknowledge objections to him. But in this book, well, I still like his voice but he is otherwise really pissing me off.

I think Theon is at a point of depression and being brought low where I can't see himself even killing himself. He'd need an injection of optimism and bravery before that. :/ I'm not really sure what to hope for him, but I'll hope nonetheless.

I liked Tyrion for a long while. Even though I can't forgive him killing Shae, I can't say I hate him or anything. But he's at a point where he's not very entertaining (which isn't surprising in itself).

[identity profile] cyshobbitlass.livejournal.com 2011-07-14 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I don't think Theon would kill himself if he had some of his old personality back, but before that I think he might so as not to risk going back to Ramsay (though he may actually think Ramsay would somehow find out and hurt him anyway).

I find Theon's story the most engaging so far in this book. And the most upsetting.

Ugh. Why are all my Theon icons hilarious?

Me, too! Which is kinda weird. I mean, i've always liked Theon a great deal, but to have him be the most engaging of the book feels... odd.

Days later.

With Davos gone, I think Jon and Stannis have made an excellent couple in this book. Maybe I just like Stannis been frustrated.

I can't guess where Asha and Theon are going. Both seemed doomed but maybe somehow they'll get a chance to do this reverse kingsmoot.

Roose can still be the creepiest character even when he barely has 2 lines.

I actually like how GRRM really increased the tension before that Stony Man attack. But never thought about Griff. Poor Griff. I was beginning to like the guy. Gets all the bad luck to Quentyns good luck.

I'm guessing Aegon is a fraud at this stage.

And Tyrion is in that expected bad place.

I rather enjoyed Jon & Stannis' interaction as well. It's funny I used to loath Stannis, but at some point due to fandom interesting, I starting finding him funny instead. I think I'm just not good at hating fictional characters XD

I think his son has him beaten. Though Roose definitely has that ice cold quality.

Re Theon:
What others and you have said is true for me as well, up to this point, Theon's chapters are the most fascinating in terms of character portrayal.

I can read your other parts only later, because I think in part 4 is the point where I stopped yesterday/this morning.

LMAO at our near-identical reactions!

Martin does love his romance novels clichés, doesn't he?

I'd love to see what kind of romance novel feature a paramour with a frequently mentioned gold tooth though.
