I wrote a long and insightful reply and was about to hit POST COMMENT when my new housemate chose to plug in the washing machine with the dodgy fuse and shut down the whole house :-(

Anyway: SPIN is an okay book, very much in the vein of Arthur C. Clarke's CHILDHOOD'S END or Carl Sagan's CONTACT, but not as good as either. I liked it enough to probably pick up the sequel, AXIS, when it comes out in paperback. And I must confess to finding Wilson's gag about doing a trilogy and calling it THE SPIN CYCLE very amusing :-D

Haven't read Brust, but Scott Lynch recommended him as well. Am a big fan of KJ Parker's FENCER TRILOGY but haven't picked up her later books. Should do, really. And I've got the COLDFIRE TRILOGY sitting on the shelf waiting to be read.
