you make a good point.

I admit I tend to look at a true story in a different way than I do a fictional way, especially if it happened (relatively) recently. The fact that they involved real people means that the respect I owe those people influence how I view the stories. It's not just an artefact, it's a part of their soul.

I'm also very suspicious of "inspired by a true story" adaptations because that often feel very disrespectful to me.

But in terms of being a true testimony of humanity, you're absolutely right. True doesn't have to be real to be true, in a way.
