Read the Sworn Sword novella and the American Gods one from Legends 2. They were good. God, can these men write ! The Martin one was the better of the two though (sorry Neil) he's really got a gift for compelling images and stories out of spare words and titles. It's amazing how something can feel both so epic and legendary and nostalgic and crude, down to earth, dirty. He's also incredibly gifted for nuance and ambiguous moral dilemnas. It's so refreshing to see non manicheistic oppositions in fantasy. Okay, LOTS of good fantasy books have that, but there's lots of bad ones out there. You'd think if they had to copy Tolkien, they could have at least copied how non manicheistic he was !
But when will this Long Fall end the Winter comes at last to give a Feast for Crow ?
Winter is Coming, but it's taking its time to do so. Fashionably late.
Now, I know how i'd answer that meme about naming kittens. I'd name a boy Summer, like my favourite Direwolf, and the girl Winter. Here ! :)
Did I mention I had watched those Loki Matentei Ragnarock episodes ? Well I did. It's very cute and sweet. Chibi Loki is a compelling character, the plots are a bit slim, but it's a very nice anime. Besides, I'm a sucker for norse mythologies.

Winter is taking its time to come..

I liked the Gaiman story less, I loved American Gods but this story I was just uhhh, maybe because I don´t know the myths he is drawing from and the story is a bit dependent on that. Of the other stories there, I think the Robin Hobb story was good, not great, and I think it is a bit short for all that character development she puts there, but interesting.

As for the myth, I had the impression it was supposed to be Beowulf. Could be wrong, thought. But Martin writes better about the beauty and the beast with Jaime and Brienne ^_^
Sworn Sword didn't need to be high impact to be interresting, and the whole background about the Blackfyre rebellion was trully fascinating and haunting. The fact the story was so... down to earth made it all the better. This is about a hedge knight after all. And it's not so different, really, that all the big intrigues and epic war.

Date: 4 May 2004 01:38 pm (UTC)About the Gaiman story, yeah I think it was Beowulf as well, which I never read and can not say I think it a universal myth ;) The story was so, well Gaiman has done lots better stories in my opinion. I also really did not like 1602 at all, I hope this is just a fluke.
And guess what, I now read come Clamp. Just some 80 pages or so, was at fnac waiting for a friend ( the type of friend we set up meetings inside the comics section at fnac, the best kind!) and saw Chobits 1, sat on the floor and started reading it. Veredict, is still early to tell, but I liked it and want to read more. A bit of the drawings made me wonder about the gratitous nudity and male fantasy think, but it seems to be tongue in cheek and so aware of that convention and is making fun of it. I will definetely read more as I can find it.
Thanks *bows down* great manga mentor :)

Totally agree with about the sworn sword. Martin writes some of the most interresting moral dilemnas.
Chobit's not my favourite Clamp, and certainly doesn't have the most interesting female characters compared to other books by them, but it's rather sweet. Hope you like it. But get yourself Tokyo Babylon ! You won't regret it :)
