Two days ago my parents visited and dropped a new furniture (I don't know how to call it, it's mostly decorative with some cupboards too) for my flat and my dad dumped a couple of GOs of blues, jazz, and oldies rock on my harddrive; and then I was bullied into rearranging my book shelves to a result which I admit is a bit neater.

Fun fact now that I can see the books on my shelves better : seems like on most English books cover the title tilts left to right (that is to say the bottom is on the right); whereas on most French books the text is tilted right to left. Funny, no? There's a couple of exceptions, of course, but that's how the big majority goes. I wonder if there's some obscure cultural reasons...

Among the music from my dad, there were some Joan Baez (gorgeous stuff) and a song called Donna Donna, and when I listened to it, I totally cracked up. DAMN YOU ANIME FOR WASTING MY ENJOYMENT OF GOOD MUSIC! Already I can't listen to Carmen without snickering softly to the bemusement of anyone around thanks to Prince Tutu, and now Utena slays my enjoyment of folk XDD
ETA: Having looked up the history of the song on the wikipedia I find the song usage in Utena kinda creepy now O_o

It's not just a song with the same title! It's the same song! See the wikipedia link I give above, it's originally a yiddish song but got translated in many languages among Japanese and English!

Good grief, that Donna Donna song from Utena really is depressing once it's taken out of context. I'd had no idea it was an already-existing song. Though it did sound quite different from the other ones.

I haven't listened to Carmen very much, but I hope that if I get to listen to it in future, I'll have Femio flashbacks. ^^ Though for someone who already knew and liked the music, I expect that might be different.

I knew the music before, but I still get Femio flashbacks! Thankfully, I don't listen to it often, when I do it's the musical background of a restaurant or stuff like that XD but I kinda like the music though so it's a bit sad to be snickering everytime.

which might make it all the more disturbing in the context it was used... -> crackful episode where a girl turns into a cow because of a cowbell she wears mistakenly thinking it's high fashion jewellery, an during a dream where her brother sells her, then eat a steak.
(Utena has a high streak of surrealism and has similar totally crackful episodes, usually all about the same girl and with an animal theme to them, you can even rationalise them with the metaphysics of the world once you've watched all the episodes)

disturbingness aside, I heartily recommend Utena, yes! It's an excellent anime series. It's got some flaws : art and animation have a little bit aged since the nineties they were made during, there's a lot of repetition of sequences and it's slow to start (there are a total of 39 episodes IIRC), however it's awesome in terms of symbolism, surrealism, psychology of the characters, deconstruction of romantic/fairy tale/shoujo tropes, feminist themes and it just never gets old to analyse and interpret. It's got a dark side to it : lots of implied sex, including incest and most characters are quite young for it, one female character is very frequently slapped; however it's not done in a voyeuristic way like some anime and it's all for the sake of the deconstruction.
So yeah, you have to look at some of this :)
