Het in Yami has always held some fascination for me. It's not totally absent in the series, nor is it used as comic relief as it is in many manga that rest on the border of gen and shounen-ai. I found Matsushita's method of using characters' relations with members of the opposite sex to reveal fundamental aspects of their own personalities too often cloaked from view. With Tsubaki, Hisoka displays a sort of tenderness that stays with him, mitigating some of the terseness in his demeanor, and later affecting his dynamic with Tsuzuki. Whereas Muraki's devotion to Ukyou does more to explain his behavior than, even, the fruits of his grandfather's legacy that spurred him on.
