Oh boy, oh boy. What a busy episode! as busy as Tyrion has been killing people XD

So many awesome! Awesome scenes from the book (Sandor vs Gregor, my heart ♥), Loras' little smug smile on his horse in heat haha, Bronn and Tyrion in the Mountains of the Moon and the start of their bromance, Ned vs Jaime (okay, badass Ned is LOL no what?) but Jaime was cool in it.

Lots of bitchfight awesome dialogues like Varys vs Littlefinguer (I like that the show makes some things clearer in terms of who are the players and how they lined up. Some info get wayyy too long to be properly conveyed in the books IMHO) - especially love the shot of Petyr gazing intently at the Iron Throne to set it up - conveys how huge his ambition is in a nice, subtle way. And we have this lovely scene between Cersei and Robert too. I really love the show's Cersei, she's so much more together and full of dignity. Works well.

Awesome scenes of beefcake XD Loras/Renly in glorious expliciteness. I like this Loras (though, why does he have to look so...blond? *sighs* I like the idea of Loras with a mess of beautiful chestnut curls. (OKay I just don' t like blond men, few exceptions excepted, and I love curly hair). Guess since Jon Snow is so curly haired that would have made the pretty boys of the show too confusing), in characterizations. Renly is a bit too... weak, but I'm not yet ready to condemn it. We'll see how that pans out. But especially Theon's very sexyfine body. Oh, Theon, you can be a little shitty asshole as long as you continue being one naked ♥

Thought Arya's in the dungeon with the dragon played well with the previous set up for it. Too bad the cat wasn't Balerion-like enough though (probably the sort of detail wouldn't work out to convey in the TV show, but you know Arya chasing down the big tomcat that was Rhaenys' kitten called Balerion down to the dungeon where all the skulls of dragons are, and hides in the skulls of Balerion the Black Dread while Varys and Illaryo plot about Daenarys and Viserys Targaryen? Lots of lovely dramatic irony there.

A little improvement on Sansa's characterizations, despite how little we saw her. Her enthusiasm with Loras worked well. I also liked Cat this ep, and Bran continues to be great. (Nice way of expositionning on the Great Houses, though I wish they'd got to the Tyrells as well (there's already someone complaining on the booksless watchers thread at rpg.net about wy the gay guy had to be the"knights of the flowers"). You'll not we've never heard the Lannisters' words yet (roar? I don't hear no roar XD).

Oh and poor Lysa, looking suitably crazy (I'm glad they didn't go with the Lysa as Fat as a signifier of how wrong and insane she is - one of the problematic things in the show).

Also I made icons:

Tu as l'air d'assurer avec les noms de tout le monde, alors peut-être que tu pourras me dire qui est le nom du brun qui traîne avec Robb Stark et Jon Snow dans le premier épisode.

Et vive le Renly/Loras !

euh... un brun qui traine avec Robb et Jon, c'est pas Theon Greyjoy (dont les cheveux ont tendance à virer du blonds ou bruns selon les reshoot malheureusement)?

They are certainly clarifying and highlighting early, aren't they? I didn't pay much attention to Theon until well into the books. Can't miss him here. : )

Making Renly/Loras explicit is a major change imo. I always liked that there are still people on the discussion boards who don't see that there was a relationship there (in the books). Human beings have such radically different ways of looking at things. One thing that scene did in a big way was draw Loras as very ambitious and astute. You have to wait a long time in the books to get a hint of what's going on in his and the Tyrells' heads. I'm concerned that it might cheapen their relationship in some people's eyes - that Loras to some degree is using Renly. Their love in the books always came across to me as one of the few pure emotions.

I'm also a little leery of the Varys conversation in the dungeons. I remember putting a lot of thought and rereading into trying to figure out what exactly Varys' game is. I don't think it's clear even yet in the books. Are they making it clear in the tv show? Has GRRM told them exactly what Varys is up to and how it will play out? Does Varys simply hate the usurpers and want to bring the Targaryans back? I thought there would be a lot more to it.

I haven't been rewatching the eps so far but I think I will this one. Too many little things easy to miss.

I enjoy posts on this - the more the better. You notice things I don't and make me think about the show more than I would have. Thanks!

haha me too, I was like "who's this?" when I reached his first chapter in ACoK

Yeah. I think it's the right choice - there're being so graphic with most hetero relationship, if they went all coy and *hinthint* with the most important gay relationship it wouldn't sit well IMHO. But it's certainly one of those things that's funny to put together on your own when you read the books ^^

Yeah, I admit it's not how I saw him, and my vision of book Loras colored it when I saw the scene : I see it as Loras loving and admiring Renly therefore thinking he should be king (though one definitely could see it as Loras just being ambitious and wanting to use his lover because of that). I agree in the books it comes across as pure.

I remember putting a lot of thought and rereading into trying to figure out what exactly Varys' game is. I don't think it's clear even yet in the books.
Yeaaah, Varys' game is tough to figure out. Even now, we're not quite certain whether he's on his own side for a purpose unknown (something magical?) or just trying to serve the Targaryens and/or Doran.

In the TV show they don't spell it out for us who was there, we can't quite see Varys (he's shrouded) and Illaryo we see quickly but it's been a while since that character was on screen so it's not that strong a clue to watchers. Then we have Petyr hinting out that it was Varys meeting a "foreign" friend. And the watchers know they were discussing the Targaryens... but to what purpose? I don't think it's that bad a way to translate the books in terms of making it too clear.

I haven't been rewatching the eps so far but I think I will this one. Too many little things easy to miss.
Heh, I've been thinking that too.

I'm glad you enjoy the posts!

The episode does leave us with a burning question:

Did Loras finish off shaving Renly's other armpit. Or is Renly going to be walking around the series with one shaved armpit and one unshaven? :-P

Jaime's facial expressions during the swordfight were priceless: Aha, this is unexpectedly fun! Hang on, what's he doing here? Oh crap, he might win! Hey, that was my fight! :-)
