- I kind of don't know where to post my fannish thoughts anymore. Tumblr? Communities? Rpg.net? My journal? Crossposting the same thing to all of them as if they were all that good or important? >_> Perhaps I should meta about this for metamarchofmonth.

- Fucking asshole on rpg.net saying they were glad spoilers for A song of ice and fire: Tyrion killed that "lying bitch".FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU.

- I have a new haircut. I should get my hair cut more often. At least every six months instead of year. Bet I'd save money on hair care products.

- Did I ever mention my new cooking plates? I have them. Yay food that i cook! I was so sick of microwave fare.

I've been having similar problems figuring out where to post my fannish thoughts. I still think of myself as primarily lj/dw-oriented, but... I definitely spend a lot more time on tumblr on any given day. (To the point that I'm spreading myself a bit too thin there.) For the most part, I'm doing okay with figuring out what to talk about where, but I'm not sure fic recs are really all that useful on lj/dw anymore, should I be moving them to tumblr? But it's so unwieldly for someone who posts as stop/start as I do.

And I feel you on not knowing whether to crosspost everywhere or keep everything fragmented. *throws hands up*

You make a really good point about archived discussion when it comes to tumblr. I'll find myself going back through my tags to rereread some of my own thoughts, but I find the vast majority of people do not tag their posts in such a way that I can find them very easily. So, unless I get really lucky, all the discussion is in the here and now.

At the same time, I think that immediacy encourages a lot of people to join in in ways they wouldn't on lj/dw. It's much less pressure to write something lengthy or coherent, sometimes you're just adding on a few tags or a single sentence of reaction and that's enough to spark a discussion. That wouldn't happen on lj/dw. (Which I think makes up for the confusion killing discussion in some places.)

It does seem like fandom is shifting away from lj/dw (even more than just that they're more active than lj/dw ever were, lj/dw is definitely slower now, at least on my flists) and I don't know if tumblr or twitter (please not twitter, it's impossible to have discussions there, sob) are the next major step, but... they seem to not be going away just yet?

Ideally, I'd love to see something combine the two, something that's fast-paced, but allows for better discussion and archival of that discussion.

Personally, I still think that journals are much better suited for fannish thoughts that are longer than a couple of paragraphs. They're also better for actual discussion (I find it very, very difficult to follow conversations on Tumblr) and, like you said, for archiving.

Perhaps you could post in your journal and link to it on Tumblr, if more people will see it there?

I've been putting most of mine on Tumblr just because - I feel really comfortable there, more than I have anywhere else. I'm not sure why, realyl.

And then I feel weird about crossposting anything.

Hmmm. If I want an actual discussion, I still prefer journals. I find it a lot easier to follow the comments there.

Grrr, and now all the people jumping to say that it is totally not misogynist but a perfectly reasonable point of view because look at Tyrion he's such a poor woobie and his wife got raped, the poor dear. ARGH.

Bah! The proper way to do it is go outside, grab some wood, get some rubbing sticks, and make yourself a fire!

I'm not entirely sure how much I'd blame Tyrion for this though. So young and with Tywin in charge of the whole proceeding, I'd say he was somewhat coerced into it.

Though he gets a pass on a lot of things from fandom that he really oughtn't yeah :(

I would post your thoughts here. You can use friends-lock, and then people (strangers) can't jump in and say dumb shit or harass you - only your friends can. Unless you want to meet new people, in which case I'd say tumblr.

When you do spoiler text, you should probably HTML the background color to white too, in case someone's default style was, you know, anything but white. In which case the white text just draws your eye to it.

I feel sort of the same as you re:Tyrion. I feel he was coerced into the rape and still like him as a character a lot, but feel he doesn't deserve the absolute pass he gets on everything.

And yeah, I feel a lot more sorry for Tyrion's wife than Tyrion there, though Tyrion was a victim there too.

It's okay. It probably says something about the series that I have some doubt over who "that lying bitch" is, but w/e.

Plus someone "spoiled" me in the first season that their favorite character died in the first book, and from context I gathered it was a male character, and I totally expected it to be Jon Snow, but then it wasn't!

btw I am having the same troubles as to where to post my fannish thoughts. Sometimes I feel like ALL THE KIDS ARE ON TUMBLR THESE DAYS *fistshake* Last time I posted a fic, I ended up posting it to Tumblr, to the Pit, to an LJ community for that fandom, and "subtly" review-whoring in my journal, and I felt like I had to do that much just to get anyone at all to look at it--regardless of the fic's quality. I used to be quite content to just post my fic quietly and let people read it if they think it's any good. And I can still do this in the larger fandoms. But in the smaller fandoms, I feel like I'm completely wasting my effort if I don't crosspost a little, because anyone who might actually like it will never even see it. It's like I have to shout at the top of my lungs just to exist at all.

I used to get less attention in the smaller fandoms, but not no attention at all. Either my writing's taken a nosedive, or fandom's changed.

The problem with splitting meta around though is that unlike fic reviews, which are pretty self-contained and are probably only relevant to the author, with meta you want discussion. I've noticed this problem with the two sets of comments on LJ and DW--we can still talk to the OP, but we can't talk to each other as much. I'd suggest posting it to one place, perhaps a community or your journal, making sure anonymous posting is turned on, then crossposting links with maybe a blurb to get people hooked. That way you sort of corral everyone to the same site.

Also, Tumblr is good for getting the word out, but terrible for having any kind of coherent discussion.

I don't really have an issue with people jumping in and I can't remember any problem of harassment.

I have issues with feeling like nobody cares about what I say.

In fact I'm often puzzled by people who voice having difficulty with confrontation - even polite - because for me it's such a none issue, whereas feeling ignored (which a lot of people would do out of politeness when they disagree with something) is a major source of anxiety for me.

Yes!! And that's pretty annoying. Not that I feel like this about fics, since I don't write much these days but...

Also, Tumblr is good for getting the word out, but terrible for having any kind of coherent discussion.

Yes, i've noticed.
The issue I have is, like, it's not always meta. It's not always very well formed. Posting an essay in a lot of places doesn't disturb me; but when it's a couples lines or so of a reaction shot, I feel a bit ill at ease posting it into too many places.
