The problem with roleplaying games is that it gives you a taste for roleplaying games, which is then frustrating because of course it is impossible to get a table to gather in a semi regular way once most of the people at the table are past highschool / college age so it's all in vain. But yeah, just do one silly Exalted one shot last week end and now I'm all about haunting RPG.net's tabletop forum (for once) in a restless state of game craving which I know I can't sate. Grrr.

Maybe PBEM, PBP or Skype + MapTools?

Anyway, I share your pain. It is such a huge hassle to get a bunch of people together who a) can tolerate each other, b) have compatible play-styles, and c) have compatible schedules.

PBEMs are definitely limited. The few I tried all ended when people just couldn't muster the energy to post anymore. It's a really drawn-out way of playing an RPG. But sometimes it's the best option available.

I haven't tried Skype + MapTools, but it seems to be the gold standard in playing with people who aren't in the room with you. It seems like it gets really close to the face-to-face experience.

When I was living in Taiwan, except for one very short period where I actually had a gaming group, I pretty much gave up on playing face-to-face RPGs. I worked on settings, played CRPGs, got into web forums (that was when I found RPGnet) and occasionally just gnashed my teeth. :)

I miss tabletop RPGs! Not that I'm likely to find anyone else out here apart from [personal profile] st_aurafina that's into them. (Actually, RPGs are how we met!)

Amen! I used to love that kind of thing, but yeah, it died out for lack of a consistent group.

Yea, I know that feeling. I started running long slow play-by-post RPs so that I could keep myself sated ^^ Not as intense as a tabletop session but still fun.

I keep up with my old gaming pals via online games, run over IRC mostly. It is still sometimes a struggle to get people to commit to showing up, but mostly it works out pretty well, since we are spread across a couple countries now :)

Yeah. They can be fun, but they're SLOW and can be hard to keep going.

I know I dislike by-e-mail/forum, anything in differed time. But via chats... I have good memories of such games.

I'm afraid one of those would merely be frustrating to me. Like, when I turn on my rpg button, it's hard for me to turn it down; so doing it so only for a few exchanges of mails before waiting for the next would... frustrating.

Yea, it can be.

One of the reasons why I run a 'everyone controls one character' game. Rather than having to wait on anyone specific, I only have to wait on *anyone* ^^
