It has suddenly dawned on me that Dresden Files rpg may be the right system to adapt Coldfire Trilogy (and its fabulous magical system).

I've played the Dresden File system. It is very easily adaptable to any sort of world. The main thing is creating a back story. Magic is very free form in the system and it has heavy costs in the way of stresses for the big things.
