The House of Black fangirl in me has just been blown away :

http://www.the-leaky-cauldron.org/MTarchives/week_2006_01_22.php#008301

it is the Black Family Tree, with a portion of the names showing in a photo. Readers will remember of course, that we learned of the tree as it was on the tapestry at Grimmauld Place in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Tony writes:

"There are several familiar names visible, including Callidora who married a Harfang Longbottom. Her sister Charis who married Caspar Crouch. Intriguingly there is a Dorea (1920-1977) who married Charles Potter and had one child, a son. The time frame seems to be consistent with them being James' parents. "

And I can also see a Violetta Bulstrode, a Herbert Burke who married Belvina Black and the infamous Arcturus Black married to Lysandra Yaxley. The aunt Elladora whose charming tradition regarding House Elves Sirius mentionned also figures on it ^^

I love this family. I love having all those new names to play with ♥

OMG! I'm squeeing like mad myself, and I'm not even all that interested in the Blacks... but, you know, backstory details. *drools*

My favourite details are that Phineas Nigellus's wife now has a name, and that apparently he and Dumbledore were born more or less around the same time (hee, bunnies!), since Jo said DD was around 150. But that got me thinking, didn't she say that wizards live longer than Muggles? Because most of the Blacks we see have normal "Muggle" lifespans...

And what's up with Arcturus? o.O Am I missing something?

I know ! I don't think I would be like this for anything else, but I'm really crazy about the Blacks ♥

Yes, and she's a Flint ^^ and Elladora was his sister. *squees*

I think JKR isn't very good at math, that's why she can't keep her wizard's age straight XD

Acturus was annunced as Regulus Black's middle name briefly at the lexicon when they confirmed he was R.A.B. before retracting themselves...

Oh God, when they said almost all pure-blooded wizarding families have bred with each other, they weren't kidding about it, heh? Malfoys, Lestranges, Weasleys, Longbottons, Flints, Crouches, Burkes, Bulstrodes... POTTERS!

Yay for new backstory canon! They're always fun.

PS: you know, if James' mom was a Black, then Harry is indirectly a Black (then again, who isn't, apparently), and that explains why he could inheritate 12 Grimmauld Place. Although he's a blood traitor and stuff. I wouldn't be surprised if one of those burns is actually James. Harry didn't see any relative of his at the family tree, after all.

Most of the fandom seems to be wondering what it means if Dorea Black was Harry's grandmother... especially the DracoxHarry shippers XD

and yes, yes, much imbreding, it's all lovely the interrelations ♥

Thanks for posting this link!

I know of some people who would rummage through this geneology for weeks, and they're only secondarily Harry Potter fans. They're really fans of generational theory and cyclical history, and they'll have a field day classifying the people named at this link according to generation. It will be a welcome diversion from discussing current political and economic events, which have dire implications when seen against historical cycles of 72-80 years in length.

Glad it's of us ! Harry Potter is fun that way, the past has so much resonnance over the current event of the story. It's really all those dark, twisted, festering, shadowy things in the background that makes it worthwhile.

Yes, there is a rich, deep backstory that goes back nearly 1000 years, to the founding of Hogwarts--and that's only for the British Isles. What about the founding of Beaubatons and Durmstrang? And what about the Wizarding World outside of Europe? The unfolding of this world parallel to that of us Muggles could occupy fandom for decades!

FWIW, I know one girl who is recasting the characters of Hikaru no Go as Onmiyo mystics and setting them in a Japan that is closed off from the rest of the Wizarding World (In her view, Commodore Perry only convinced the Muggles; the Japanese Wizards were less than impressed).
