I support Human rights and Llama rights.
Also, I dislike stupid memes.
While we're on the subject of political (*snorts*) activism, how many people currently pissed at LJ's policies would be with me for an action of basically deleting all our journals / communities for one day? I suppose that couldn't be something they could ignore, and would make the warning clear?
Or does that sound like a bad idea (because it's a bad way, because all of us LJ-users are overreacting and we can really trust the LJ people, whatever)?

Date: 3 October 2006 10:39 am (UTC)I'd be with you in the blackout. There also seems to be something forming for November 5th along these lines, but that day is rather far off.

Date: 3 October 2006 02:50 pm (UTC)LJ just seems to have discovered that there is more money to be made by ignoring the user base than by listening to us. Of course, that will work for a year or two, then they'll have scared everybody off and go belly-up.

Date: 3 October 2006 02:41 pm (UTC)I think I've seen a lot of overreaction, it's true, but I also think there's an accumulation of small annoying things that show a pattern of disrespect to the users.
As for the annoying thing, for me, personnaly :
- Plus account with ads as default, it's not a current issue for me because I'm a paid account user, but that means I have to to remain a paid account user to keep avoiding ads
- the lj nav bar thing, still not possible to remove from everywhere I go to because the setting is so stupid, and the fact they turned it on for everyone in a very annoying way
- the ridiculous new user info they wanted us to like ^_^ they backtracked on that one, thank God.
- the sponsorized communties, to invite a professional presence on LJ, which i'm feeling quite wary about.
(all I can remember right now)
On the plus side, I'm a big fan of the Tracking tool ^_^

Date: 3 October 2006 05:54 pm (UTC)But the other things don't all feel that bad for me.
The new user info was horrible, and I complained to them a lot (like pretty much everyone else) until they changed it. That one would really have changed the whole feeling of the site.
The nav bar annoyes me, and the fact when they turned it on for everyone annoyed me even more, but it's something I can ignore with just scrolling down a little bit.
And I love the Plus account idea. I'm trying it on a writing LJ (my paid account for the main LJ expires in a few months), and I think having more icons and customization options in exchange of a few adds is worth it. It's a great idea for those of us who don't have credit cards and/or live somewhere where dollar change isn't convenient.
So, all in all... I don't know. I think LJ's good things are a lot more than the bad ones, and the (few) changes that annoy me are more about design than policies. As long as I can design *my own* LJ and keep a readable user info, I don't mind what they do to their own site.

Date: 3 October 2006 07:53 pm (UTC)Agreeing with you about the nav bar. I dislike that they turned it up for everyone, but I also dislike that there's a possibility to turn it up for everyone who visits your lj regrdless of what you want. It should be the other way around in term of usability it's what makes sense.
I'm not against the plus account idea as such. I'm annoyed they madeit default, which means it's what a lot of newcommer will take, which means a lot of free user will have to see adds.
I've been in cases where I couldn't use any credit card to pay my account, I know how it was :(
I don't know yet... but the latter trend was more for bad things than for good things, so yeah, I'm worrying. Not decided yet, but wary.

Date: 4 October 2006 03:06 am (UTC)Oh, definitely. And a lot of people are telling them that...
I guess that, in my case, the thing is that they haven't done anything that really upsets me (and hopefully they won't). And I also think that a part of my reaction comes from being annoyed at the people who are overreacting. There are legitimate complaints, and then there are people who act like the world is going to end because Horizon has a bigger font. :/

Date: 3 October 2006 07:35 pm (UTC)about the meme, it was a small paragraph that people where simply copy-pasting to their journal, that basically said "I support Gay rights. If you support Gay Rights post this on your journal, if you don't just ignore this." I can paste it to you texto if you want.

Date: 3 October 2006 03:25 pm (UTC)I'd delete my journal for a day (and I'm considering not renewing my paid account come December), but I kinda feel that mass journal deletion is something they can ignore. I mean, if they know we'll just undelete it the next day, what do they care? And yeah, I know it'll show them that we're pissed off, but I think they already knew that.

Date: 3 October 2006 07:49 pm (UTC)My account expires in November. I might leave then. Trouble is finding the alternative and not losing touch with people.

Date: 4 October 2006 02:31 am (UTC)Aww. :/ Well if you do leave, you'll have to let me know where you head off to so I can keep track of you.
