In what circumstances did it happen? (were you already in the fandom, were you a newcommer to the fandom and that was the first fic that settled your taste, did the fic bring you into the fandom? etc.)
How did you find this fanfic? (big list of recs, personnal rec from a friend, a bit of a random event? etc.)
How much of a convert did you become (biggest OTP, one of your favourite ships, just one ship among others? etc.)
Do you still love this fanfic just as much, or did you tastes change once you were into the ship?
Has the opposite ever happened to you, has a fanfiction succeeded to repulse you from a pairing on a permanent basis (don't link to it! that could be considered wanky ^^ unless that was the objective of the fic, of course)

It was Water by kissherdraco (which is Hr/D) and I Have Never Felt Your Fear (which has some really interesting pairings, but is mainly Draco/Ginny). I can't remember the author exactly but its onwww.dracoandginny.com...i think.

I had never ever read any fanfiction, or was even in the Harry Potter fandom when I saw on someone's profile somethign about Draco and Hermione. My first reaction was huh??? I was so curious I clicked on the link and it lead me to the community dramione. I read a few of the fics that were being reccomended at the time but they were too fluffy and Draco was being portrayed as too much of a good guy which sort of bothered me. Then I found Water and wow. It's so raw and well done. Even if you don't like Hr/D I would reccomend this. For a few months I was *hardcore* dramione, but I couldn't really find any fics that were as good as Water except for one that was abandoned unfortunatley so I was just about to give up on HP fandom when I read I Have Never Felt your Fear. I don't think a fic has ever made me lol like this one and while the main pairing is Draco/Ginny, the side pairings are much more interesting.

Eh, I got sick of Draco/Ginny because the fics pretty much just started to blend together. I'll still reread Water because its a WIP and also because its amazing but I'm more into fanart than fanfic nowadays.

Yes.

Date: 3 March 2007 07:25 am (UTC)I was converted to what is now my favorite pairing by reading several fics that made it seem plausible for me.
When I first started looking for Pirates of the Caribbean fic, I was vaguely aware that Jack/Norrington existed, and wasn't exactly fond of the idea. I was feeling my way around, joining lj communities and mailing lists that seemed to be full of decent authors, and reading a little of everything. I was also realizing that I had sadly ignored the gorgeous honorable men in navy uniforms during my initial viewings and reading everything I could get my hands on about them. Then, I ran into a couple of fics that were written by authors who I knew characterized Norrington well that also paired him with or had him engaging in some very subtexty flirtation with Jack. The one that really stands out in my mind is Negotiations (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2352114/1/). I also found a couple of one-shots that really got to me, such as On the Nature of Love (http://shrieking-ell.livejournal.com/32066.html#cutid1) and Perhaps (http://oneiriad.livejournal.com/83431.html) (that one brought tears to my eyes). Norrington had by this time become my favorite character, and finding fics that I felt captured him well was one of my greatest fannish joys. So, when I realized that he COULD be paired with Jack and stay the character I loved, and that well-written banter between them could be brilliant and amazing and HOT when done right, I fell hard. Sparrington is now my favorite 'ship.
I still love all of the fanfic that started me down this road as much as I did the day I read it. In fact, I often rec them to friends who are new to reading in the fandom and want Norrington stories because I think they're just that good.
(On a side note, I was converted to the idea that Norrington/Gillette was a lovely little ship by the same author who helped convert me to Sparrington... it was a ship that had never even crossed my mind, but she pulled it off so beautifully that I couldn't help but like it.)
As for being put off a ship by a fic... does all of the atrocious Kingdom Hearts Axel/Roxas fic I've come across count? I came away from the game having had very little interaction with the fandom and thinking that Axel/Roxas had a great deal of potential. However, when I went looking and found that almost everything that had been written for the pairing was... shall we say... sub-par, I quickly lost interest.

Date: 28 August 2009 05:32 am (UTC)When the first Pirates of the Caribbean film came out I knew with out doubt that Jack Sparrow was different. But I got the vibe that he and Will would be the ship I sailed because... thats what I saw.
Then on the most fateful of days that could only be made true by destiny itself - I went looking for Jack/Will fanfiction roughly a year after the movie. I went to this site called Bella Donna (hasnt been updated in YEARS)and clicked on "Couples." As it turns out, Jack/Norrington and Jack/Will were right next to eachother and I accidently clicked the former.
I had only a passing idea of Norrington. In the movie I liked him, I thought he was a strong noble character but not much else. I read the first story I found there anyways and hooo boy. I have never, ever looked back.
I wish I could say which one it was that hooked me. But I read all of them so fast I quickly drowned in the fantastic ship of Sparrington. To this day, this is my OTP. And somehow Norrington won his way into my heart as my favorite character ever.
As for turned off by a pairing... Oh yes. I got into Speed Racer for a while. It was real fun. X and Speed are related though so I always felt a little weird reading them basically have incest, but they were sooo damn goood! Then one day a trend started where instead of Speed and Racer X being consenting adults, Speed was a 9 year old boy and X was in high school and they were doing the same thing. It was reading pedophile incest and it just threw me right off.

but the one exception was due South: i got converted to the pairing (Fraser/RayK) AND started watching the source canon because of a vid.
