So I've got my computer back and am currently re-installing a bunch of programs. I'll see about finding back all my links and stuff like this later. I always find this a bit depressing but I guess it's a good opportunity to clean up. Sometimes I can't believe the mass of junk one manages to amass on a harddrive.

I've got meself a brand new HD (my old ones being fried). Of the 60% data that they manage to rescue from the old comp, there were little of my currently used files which I hadn't bothering archiving somewhere yet. That especially means every doc files I was working on, draft of HP fics and the like, are all gone. ;_;
On the plus side, most of my big archives of video, images and music files are still there (except there was a LOT of music files I hadn't archived yet, so so much for them).

I think I'll also use the occasion to switch to firefox.

Owch. My hard drive on the new PC spectacularly imploded about 18 months ago. Luckily, I was able to retrieve a lot of important stuff from my old PC. My former-and-future landlord actually has a ton of my most important files still sitting on his external hard drive as a backup if this one goes again.

Something I am doing regularly is backing up my most vital Word files to email. I attach them to a email addressed to myself, and hey presto, I have a backup stored on my Hotmail account. Maybe you could consider something like this for your most irreplaceable fics? :-)

sorry for your own PV.

External HD do sound fine, but right now I find them a bit too expensive.

I think I'll just have to be more careful with stuff I write, save them online for example. Definitely :)

Really? Last time I looked into getting one in the UK, it was about £80 for 500GB, which was less than half the price they were the year before. I suspect they'll be even lower by the time I get back :-)

My dad said 100€. Granted for a lot of space, but that's still a lot for me right now.

DDD: That's sucktastic.

The only good that will come of this is you switching to Firefox.
