Episodes 3x05 to 3x10 (Collaborators, Torn, A Measure of Salvation, Hero, Unfinished Business, The Passage)

Collaborators

There's your Gaeta centric episode, yay!

I liked this one, the exact kind of dark and gritty I could enjoy. The difficulty of going through with your life after everything that happened. I liked that it was Zarek going in Roslin's back, and why he did (although I thought he was wrong, public trials at least would have been cathartic, and of course he put the wrong people in charge of it) and I liked Roslin's eventual decision. (Her getting back in power that easily and simply, however, feels wrong... but I understand after last season they don't want to deal with any more politicing)

Gaeta was way smexy with his long curly hair ♥ Liked how he said that maybe he could/should have done more. That's something nobody can know.

Chief's still awesome.

Loved Baltar's little daydream at the beginning, still hoping to escape responsabilities.

Torn & A Measure of Salvation

Helo rocks.

Kara and Tigh are new BFF, I love that XDDDD

Baltar's not a Cylon XDD definitely. But I like that we get a glimmer of a possibility that there's a plot reason for the not seeing the other Cylon models around. I wonder if they might be the ones behind all those visions/imaginary!Six, et cetera. Or at least involved with it as well. The Cylons themselves don't appear to know all that much about them.

And yay for Starbuck getting short hair back, she's much sexier with those.

Hero

You know... Lee being back to CAG, Gaeta and Dualla back on the deck, (not to mention Roslin's president) you get a feeling of pre-Pegasus reset about it all - wondered what happened to the people who did their job while they were away. Meh.

Not a great episode, but despite the continuity fuzziness, I liked the feeling of giving a texture to the Colonial culture. That there was an antagonism between the Admiralty and the President, and some colonies which were protesting, and that they were actually thinking about what the Cylons were doing during all this time. That's not often we get that.

The plot otherwise barely hangs together, but I didn't mind as much as I have before. Tigh kicked ass, which is cool ^^ And is it me or Roslin was especially hot in this one?

Unfinished Business

We were overdue a flashback episode about New Caprica so I'm glad we got it. The boxing fight excuse framing felt a bit flimsy and silly but why ever not. The whole Kara and Lee's trainwreck made enough sense for me, although I'm not a big fan, overall, about the way they've handled Anders and Dee. (I miss Dee, when, you know, she had a personality?)

Adama and Chief's fight made less sense to me, then again, I'm hardly an Adama fan.

And we saw Ellen! Ellen and Tigh being happy! And Gaety being a dorky presidential aide! ♥ And Adama and Roslin totally had sex that night, didn't they? XD

The Passage

I like Kat, so I was happy the episode appeared to center on her but then her death was so obviously set up I got a little tiny bit annoyed. So much for the magical anti-radiation meds, too, you know, the ones that allowed Helo and Sharon to survive and have a baby on irradiated Caprica (then again it's the magical cancer-curing baby, so maybe that's the reason)... However I did like the focus on a logistic problem (missed those), and that feeling of almost hard-science grittiness (well, hard science for TV, you know). Kat's mysterious past was slightly pasteded on yay, and between this episode and Hero this show's skanky race issue are not improving. They also milked it for pathos slightly too much for my taste (When I was laughing because Lee has been retrograded from Pegasus Commender to not even a CAG anymore instead of being moved by the last minute promotion, it is not a good sign). That said, Kat kicked ass ♥ So long.

(I wish I liked it more when they kill characters on this show, I'm usually a sucker for a good character death stories, but so far the only one that's hit home in the right character and plot-coherent way was Ellen's.)

On the other hand, Baltar's on the Cylon ship was fun at the beginning but is starting to get old. They need to be moving that part of the storyline quickly instead of drop-feeding the hints of revelations.

I disliked Kat a lot and was well glad to see her gone. She was completely cocky and arrogant despite how many times she was shown to be in the wrong and any achievements that she had seemed to be mostly lucky to be in the right place at the right time (like killing Scar).

In some ways she was like Starbuck, but we were never shown any redeeming qualities from her, unlike Starbuck.

Now, that's just mean XD

I don't quite agree with that. She was cocky and arrogant, yes, but she was definitly a good pilot anyway. In "Scar", she was right about most of the things she was reproching Kara (althoug she was very agressive about it, but it was no worse than Starbuck's done to Tigh). Scar took both her and Kara to get killed, they succeeded because of their teamwork. Neither Kara nor Kat could have done it alone so they both get credit for it.

Yeah, but it was Kat who got, and arrogantly took the credit when it was due to both of their efforts and she was just lucky to be the one in position to get the kill.
A more likeable character would have shared credit like it was due :)
She was one of the most ungracious winners ever, and Starbuck pwnd her arrogance with her speech upon Scar's defeat.

I'm sure that if we'd known as much about Kat as we do about Starbuck, she'd have been more sympathetic a character, but as it was I, and at least some of the people I've discussed the show with, found her annoying.

On Starbuck and Tigh, I think Kara had only so much respect for Tigh because of his drinking and not-so-great behaviour as her superior officer. With Kat, it seemed like she only gave Starbuck a hard time in the hopes that it would make her look better than Starbuck and I find the former to be more legitimate :)

She was ungracious, but she was also owed the aknowledgement by Kara which had treated her like crap previously. She's not a gracious person. Neither is Starbuck though :)

Are you kidding? For all that Tigh is a drunk and occasionnaly and idiot we, at the point that Kara got into his face, had not seen him failing as a leader (the only time Tigh did was when he was in Adama's seat and when he was trying to recover from Ellen's death). Starbuck, as a leader, however, was totally unravelling. She was drinking as much as Tigh as, that much is clear. And she was not showing up to do stuff when she ought to. And meanwhile pilots were being killed left and right. Kat's friends were being killed. I sympathize much more with Kat for yelling at Kara in this case than I do for yelling at Tigh (much as I love the Tigh-Kara bickering and I do adore it ♥)

Kara clearly has little respect for Tigh from the very start ("punching a superior asshole" :P). While he did perform well in the pilot (venting the deck that was on fire), the other crew apart from Adama who show an opinion on Tigh clearly question his judgement as an XO.
It doesn't matter that we haven't seen him fail at that point, he clearly has his demons which affect him and those who work with him.
Kara's drinking isn't shown to impact her performance or her crewmates' perception of her as much as it does with Tigh (though clearly, she's rather self-destructive, but it comes across as sympathetic to us).

Collaborators was definitely my favorite episode of these. It was plot relevant and at the same time interesting on it's own merit and I love the stuff with Zarek and Roslin a lot.

The Baltar-on-the-basestar stuff I think was a homage to the original series (where Baltar was more obviously evil and had his own basestar to command) but they didn't really have enough plot for it and he ended up not doing much.

On the jobs thing, yeah, things get reset pretty quickly but they do shake it loose again. Helo gets juggled around a bit (not sure why he just doesn't go back to being a Raptor ECO but what the hell?). We do see some of the Pegasus crew as well: Hoshi (the Pegasus communications officer) is Dualla's relief in some episodes and some of the Pegasus pilots are now in the Galactica fighter wing.

Kara's death was pretty meaningless. I think they just decided they hadn't had a death for a while and chose to off her.

Also: Tigh beating up a guy half his age with a metal pipe. Kickass! :-D

I've just noticed Hoshi yes.

*raises an eyebrow* I hope this is not meaningful lapsus? XD

Tigh's just that motherfucking awesome!

(how come the Galway meeting is so short?)

A lot of people are taking just the weekend off for it. No reason at all why other people can't stay longer. For example, I've got the whole week off, Thursday to Thursday (24 April-1 May) and am up for hanging out with anyone else who wanted to stay on that bit longer :-)

I might do that. It's a bit too bad to pay for a plane ticket and only enjoy the place for three days.

That's true. There's a major literature festival on at the same time, for example, that extends into the following week which may be worth checking out, as well as a few other local attractions.
