15 May 2008 05:21 pmI think I'm in a wanky mood.
Got anything I could wank at? (wait, that sounds dirtier than I meant). Maybe I should actually start following one of these something_rant communities I look down on so much.

Date: 15 May 2008 03:39 pm (UTC)And...man, you're way behind. IMO, Acid Tokyo arc is where it really starts getting good. Nearly everything before the LeCourt arc is too fluffy for my tastes, it's after that that things get nice and dark. :D

Date: 15 May 2008 03:43 pm (UTC)1/ Comfort : it's just not as nice as holding a book in my hands, lazily lying on my bed. It throws off my reading pleasure and for some reason, that's more uncomfortable to me when reading manga compared to reading fanfics vs books.
2/ Rhythm : I prefer to have my story in big chunks than in small bits (I prefer TBP to whatever the names for chapter issues for comics for the same reason)
Hahaha! I've seen lots of people say the opposite of that to me. Since I tend to adore clamp!angst&gore, I think I'll agree with you more though ^^so far Tsubasa has been fun crack rather than very entrancing as such (xxxholic is so much better despite the fact I'm not too fond of Watanuki or Doumeki)

Date: 15 May 2008 03:53 pm (UTC)I actually got so used to reading scanlations that I like it better than TPBs. The pictures take up my whole 15" screen, as opposed to the tiny little graphic novels. In general I can see the art better. But to each their own.
As to reading it in chunks, after I got to the good stuff, it was just a breakneck race to get current. I couldn't stop. Since you're so far behind, you'd have a good long read ahead of you if you tried to get current. The latest is chapter 190, so....yeah.
At the moment I like Tsubasa better than Holic, but I do like them both very much, and I'm behind on Holic, so my love for it may catch up as I do.
As for anyone who could read a CLAMP series and think that the cute beginning was ANYTHING but a setup for twisted, mindblowing angst, I wonder if they've heard the saying, "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me eight or more times, shame on ME."

Date: 15 May 2008 03:59 pm (UTC)LOL! They've been growing on me, especially Watanuki because he can be a real sweetheart at times (albeit a pretty stupid one), but it may be because I loved so much Lawful Drugs and sometimes they really feel like pale copies of Kazahaya and Rikuou except not as
hotcharming? Dunno, maybe it's just their character design and expressions.Since you're so far behind, you'd have a good long read ahead of you if you tried to get current.
True. I'm occasionnally complentating the idea. But not until I get a new computer (I'm currently on a loaned laptop)
Tsubasa better than Holic? You surprise me. That means Tsubasa must be getting really better than it's been before;

CLAMP do have some series which are fluff, quirkiness and sugar from start to finish...

Date: 15 May 2008 04:21 pm (UTC)Yup. Red Herring and Red Herring 2.
I was told Tsubasa was great and I haaaaad to read it, and I got as far as volume eight and nearly hucked the monitor across the room, because I was promised gore and vampires and suffering, and instead got EBIL BUNNY WABBITS.
...but then, much later, I picked it up again, and the fluff was more bearable because I wasn't fresh from the first eight volumes, so I was able to get to the good stuff. It really does get quite good, IMO.

God, i had fluffy mascots. Kero's actually decent half of the time, but Mokona(s) just need(s) to die. Painfully.
I found early tsubasa fun because I kinda love A/U, meta-ness and am a big CLAMP fan who was happy to see a lot of old CLAMP characters XDD

Date: 16 May 2008 04:29 am (UTC)OK, so I may be biased because the idea of a Pupuuing, fluffy god amuses the hell out of me. XP
Also: I was going to tell you 'No, don't read TRC past Piffle! It turns to mindblowing ansgt!' and then realized that, well, you'd probably like it better. XDDDDDDD
And the latest chapitre has a very very pretty Seishirou/Subaru spread, have you seen it?

Date: 16 May 2008 06:32 am (UTC)Yes, I like angst! Bring on the angst!
Nah, I haven't seen it, what with avoiding spoilers I don't dare look at stuff that may be posted by people :)

Date: 16 May 2008 06:46 am (UTC)Oh, you'll probably love it when you get to see it then. My S/S loving friends were very happy with it.

Date: 15 May 2008 03:52 pm (UTC)My first reaction was more of rolling my eyes at making a big stuff out of it because, yes, it's coopting, and yes it shows a great lack of tact, but the whole world is already coopting the Shoah narrative starting with JKR herself, and usually no one call them on that. I couldn't figure if people were saying a RPG made it somehow more offensive or something (which I would disagree with, i think it's worse when it's done for profit and showing a lot of ignorance). Also the issue of coopting and how much you can take inspiration from real tragedies is a very complicated one, I don't think you can cut the line very easily.
Then I saw the kind of antisemitic abuse that - gosh I don't remember her user handle - had to suffer for daring voicing her objection to the community. It was disgusting stuff and made me want to throw up. Felt ashamed I had actually at first defended those people.
I've been entirely uninterested in the etiquette issues about dog piling or shunning discussions since then.
the way J.K. Rowlings heavy-handed tropes really laid the groundwork for a RPG like this
I wish there were more discussions of this because I know I was ill at ease at DH in particular about this. But i don't think I have enough actual knowledge to argue about it in a convincing way.
