I want to talk about how my ships and concept of shipping varies with fandom, so name me a fandom and I'll discuss what I ship and what shipping means to me in that fandom.

Date: 25 October 2008 03:04 pm (UTC)You had Kaho/Touya, Sakura->Yukito, Shaoran->Yukito, Meiling->Shaoran in the anime... and they all end up with different persons, because that's the relationships they build in the end. I dig that. Not sure if it's relevant to shipping though :D
Actually all those fandoms have strong themes built on the idea of the relationships (romantic or not) that you build through time with people and of their value. What's put in danger in CSS, and also and what gives reality to people, or allow them to change their destiny, in all three, something which I find pretty interesting. Could tie that with the way X says that the people we love are the reason we live, and the reason people shouldn't be killed.
I still haven't talked about shipping, have I?
I'm not really active in any of these fandoms, of those the one I've followed he most was CSS in a very small corner of it and only long after the series was finished. I've always liked Touya/Yukito, so I was happy to read that when I realised I liked reading fanfics :D then I tried out other ships of a more crack pairing nature. Some I didn't like (had a very allergic reaction to Touya/Tomoyo), some I rather liked (Sonomi/Fujitaka for exemple, Clow/Yue - I know, you don't like 'em), or the kinds of random pairings I've only seen once or twice in fics... I know theoretically that it's a fandom with lots of insufferable fanbrats but since I never encountered those people personally I don't have bad association with it like that :D
For Holic, I don't ship anyone - unless you count Clow/Yuuko. I was sold that pairing by people like you and laurus very early, so I'm not sure i would have seen it all by myself XD but now I really like it. It's near enough to canon. I don't pay attention to the rest of the fandom because all the other ships leave me really really 'meh' so I'm not sure what's shipping like in this fandom.
In TRC I've always liked Kurogane/Fay but I was reluctant to read fics because we had too few informations in the beginning (and right was I, I bet nobody foresaw the most crackful revelations we got, all those fics josses!) - so again, didn't pay so much attention to the fandom. Again it's a ship based on near canon ship teasing.
Actually you could say all the ships I like in those fandoms have some interesting kinds of symbolic dualities, the whole sun/moon, sky/earth, dark/light thing. CLAMP does love it's dualities. (and me as well).
ETA: Also all those fics are "softer" compared to the antagonistic pairings I usually like. They all have friendly and sweet interactions - well, at most, they bicker :)

Date: 25 October 2008 05:11 pm (UTC)Because of that it's also a fairly tolerant and anything-goes fandom which is a lot of fun :)
I'm not myself a very big shipper in Utena - I mean, what is there left to say? At the same time, sure, I'll ship anything that's hinted (or obvious) on sceen, because Oh, the lovely mindfuck and neuroseses and symbolism ♥
I've got one big ship which I've read a lot, that's Saionji/Touga. Totally hit my friends-turned-enemy antagonistic pairing buttons.
I've never written for it - and I'm not likely to.
What I've written for is whole Akio/Anthy/Utena triangle of doom.
I don't really ship Anthy/Utena, for some reason, I just never found it compelling, but add Akio to the equation and I find the dynamics exhilarating.
I'm also pretty fond of Juri/Ruka/Shiori and Miki/Kozue on screen or in short fanfics that show up on my flist.
Also Kozue/Anthy is hot and would love to read it.(see icon)
But to me shipping in Utena is more about exploring the characters and their neurosis than it is about the pairings themselves, you know ^^

Date: 25 October 2008 05:25 pm (UTC)No, really I do. I think? Because CLAMP love their onetruedoomedpairings, but they also are terrible ship teases.
I mean, take Sorata, he's a sweet boy. Sorata/Arashi is OTP of course, and they're darlings.
But!
Can you ship Sorata with Yuuto? HELL YES.
With Kamui? SURE!
With Subaru? KINDA.
With basically anyone he actually exchanged words with? I BET YOU COULD!
See what I mean?
Also the X fandom is insane in a wonderful way so they'd roll with it. I mean there's a Arashi/Subaru ship manifesto at
And of course, I also have my onetruedoomedpairing: Seishirou/Subaru which is everything I've always dreamed about without hoping to see it written. And the whole, Seishirou, Fuuma, Kamui, Subaru, any combination thereof combo of doom, pain, angst and sexiness.
And I have many side crack pairings. Like Yuuto/Karen, Tokiko/Karen, Yuzuriha/Satsuki, Karen/Setsuka, Seishirou/Tohru...
and of course there's the side pairings which are actually canon like Tohru/Saya ♥ Aoki/Karen and, well, Sorata/Arashi.
In conclusion: the X fandom is a slut, we love it for it.

Date: 25 October 2008 05:34 pm (UTC)And I think the fandom backs me up on that :D the characters are just that cute, and the main four have very strong relationship with each others in all combination :D of course Fakir/Ahiru is my favourite, they're so very, very cute and heartbreaking, and bringing out the best in each other (
i'm totally stealing your lines), and because I really love how Ahiru's brings out Fakir's dorkishness and Ahiru really deserves to be loved - but I love all of them. I also love the random mini pairings like Arthur with Rue, or with Fakir, and Pike's crush on Fakir too, and all the characters who show up once also have wonderful potential.I think I should read more Tutu fics :D

Date: 26 October 2008 01:11 am (UTC)So basically you could say that I'm all about Zuko being shipped with various people XD
But the fact they're kids is really difficult to deal with *sheepish*

Date: 26 October 2008 02:28 pm (UTC)Of the canon ships, I like Kara/Lee well enough on screen but am just not motivated to see fics for it. I liked a few Leoben/Kara fics, though, although I wasn't really thinking of it before it. Baltar/Caprica is one of the ship I was interesting in but felt left down on during S3 *sad* so much potential. Oh, and Tigh/Ellen ♥
I think that's about it...

Date: 26 October 2008 02:38 pm (UTC)Fandom being what it was I eventually contemplated more crackful pairings. Like Jaime/Loras, Sandor/Arya, or Daenarys/Sansa/Arya (do not ask). And reading fics made me see the light that is Theon/Jon, Arthur/Jaime, Cersei/Sansa and, err, many others.
So basically three core semi-canon ships, a few beloved crackful ships, and many, many, many ships I'd read anyway because there's always an interesting twist to throw in it.

Date: 26 October 2008 05:32 pm (UTC)ASOIAF is one fandom (my only fandom, I think) where the only pairings that really seem to interest me are the crack pairings. (Well, OK, Arthur/Jaime is not crack because Jaime's such an obvious fanboy, but it's not exactly mainstream, either.) I think Gendry/Arya, as in the book and future!fic is cute, but not something I'll seek out, and I'll read SanSan or Jaime/Brienne when it's well written (which it actually tends to be -- for such a tiny fic fandom, ASOIAF has a great concentration of talent) but I don't actually ship either of those. But bring on the Jaime/Loras, Arthur/Oberyn, Tywin/Sansa, Jon/Mel, the crackier the better :D

Date: 28 October 2008 02:14 am (UTC)That's true! I wish there were more longer fics with plot though :)
Did you actually write a fic for it?
I kinda did. Heavy on the kinda. It was actually the first fic I wrote, and it was meant more as a crackful parody with very bad puns. This is why I asked you not to ask :P
