Go through the list and check off the titles you have watched. For our purposes, "watching" a title means that for TV and OVA series, you have to have seen at least one episode. For one-shots, you have to have seen the whole thing. At the end of each genre/category, add up your sub-total. At the very end, add up the sub-totals to come up with your grand total. If your grand total is 80 or over, congratulations -- you are an obsessive anime watcher!

An Editor's Note: not all the titles listed here are great, and some are even steaming piles of crap. Titles on the list are here because they are either 1) genuinely good, 2) insanely popular, 3) good examples of the genre, or 4) just plain notorious. Good anime obsessives should be able to watch series with any of those qualities.

Motto! And I thought the 80's were like the golden age of the magical girl genre :-C WHERE'S CREAMY FOR FUCK'S SAKE. But honestly I'd really score low on this meme I think - too little oldies :-) I'm so not caught up. I was watching Death Note with the corner of my eyes yesterday - okay, I couldn't pay attention because I was in full deadline panic, but I couldn't help but think "o hai myspace emos".

Mmmh, Utena totally belongs in "Surreal and Psychological" IMO. It's too subversive to belong in such a very recognizable genre like magical girls.

Yes, exactly Creamy! Not to mention Gigi! Well, there's a lot of oldies that were popular in Western Europe in the 80's in general that are missing there ^^

but I couldn't help but think "o hai myspace emos".
ROFL. Not a bad description of Death Note

Well, I agree that Utena is surreal and psychological, but when i think in terms of genre, I dunno, it's a deconstruction of Magical Girls, and it heavily references Roses of Versailles... so I wouldn't have thought of it that way. Princess Tutu is totally a Magical Girl though.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I would have come up with rather different choices had I made this meme - I guess it really depends on what has been available in Europe vs. the US or something. Then I'm pretty sure a Japanese person would have made another list as well. (relatedly: check out secret #170, lol!)

I have problems in fitting Utena into a genre exactly because it steps so often into deconstruction and metatext - it's a bit of a one of a kind thing, and I think it shows in its achieving cult status while having little or no apparent influence over later series (at least as far as I can tell, my involvment in anime fandom has gradually decreased since the early 2000's). And talking about works that influenced SKU, I don't remember if you saw Kanashimi no Belladonna?

Oh, yes, definitly.

(relatedly: check out secret #170, lol!)
LOL yes it's exactly that. Were we Italians and French really the only ones to have access to such a broad number of anime? awww.

I don't remember if you saw Kanashimi no Belladonna?
I haven't seen it, but I remember you talked about it at length once, and you posted, I think it was the trailer? It looks fascinating. I didn't know it was Ikuhara that had worked on it! Cool!

Date: 16 January 2009 12:06 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] matitablu.livejournal.com
No, it isn't actually by Ikuhara (but Osamu Dezaki was in it! Omg!), but wikipedia says it was the film that made him want to go into animation in the first place. There's a lot of themes and visual concepts that are *so* Utena it hurts IMO, only 30 years earlier. I had found the file here, unfortunately it's Real Media, but an .avi might be up on torrent. Idk, my router is fighting all my attempts to install any p2p software D:

No dragonball? :P

Ranma 1/2 / Sailor Moon saw a few eps as a kid
Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away

Planetes
I love that series, anime seems well suited for SF, however no other SF anime has interested me enough as I dislike mecha/ emo or mind powers which are stronger than weapons/ uberships and the only fan service I care for is space ship porn. I would love see a big space war as a anime in which resources, strategy, tactic and giant fleets shape the outcome of the war.

I think I might actually have you beat on this meme, even after you correct it for missing the action/adventure section.

BTW, there are a few shows that you haven't seen that I'd recommend.

Comedy--the Tenchi Muyou OVA, Tenchi Universe, or any of the movies.

Drama--Last Exile.

Ecchi--Ebichu and Puni Puni Poemi.

Fantasy--Scrapped Princess and Trinity Blood.

Magical Girls--Magical Girl Pretty Sammy (the OVAs, but only if you watched the Tenchi Muyou OVAs first) and Saint Tail.

Romance--Please Teacher! (at least you read the Chobits manga; I'd be very surprised that you considered yourself a CLAMP fan and didn't have contact with Chobits and Angelic Layer).

Science Fiction--Voices of a Distant Star.

Surreal--FLCL.

Actually, I watched Puni Puni Poemi! Of those I'm vaguely curious about Scrapped Princess. I think I might actually have watched an ep of Last Exile and didn't like it.

I'm not crazy about harem romance so anything Tenchi based doesn't interest me, or Please Teacher!
Didn't much like Chobits either.

so Utena and Princess Tutu aren't in Magical Girls?
