It's not one event, it's just... there's nothing good anymore. Only wince inducing bad threads. I can't remember the last time I've seen a good thread there, you know? The "5 greatest thinkers", the "a secular case against gay mariage", it's all WOW, so very bad.
Whoa, hold your horses on that gay marriage thread. That is one guy posting the ramblings (oops, I meant essay :p ) of a economic post grad student in the US. About 99.9% of all folks utterly disagreed with him. RT of course thought it was a good piece of work but then we all know what a worthless piece of crap he is.
There have been some pretty interesting things going on as well in the past weeks - it is not all doom and gloom!
well I tried reading it, but more than a few posts and I got too tired and annoyed of the same old to continue. It's just not an environment that makes you want to stay to do any other thing than fight with people. Sorry that's just how I feel, but yeah, I'm sure for others it's different.
It's bad, but not quite as bad as it was about three weeks ago. There was one point when I looked at every single thread title in GC and thought we were in serious trouble. Half of them were on teh sex (with RhaegarTar's thoughts, which I really didn't need) and the other half were ObamaIsraelIranGlobalWarmingOMGWTFArgh! I had to abandon GC for about a week to recover my wits.
Mind you every time I think Westeros has gone crazy I check out some other boards and realise how relatively sane it is. I got made a mod on Dragonmount and went through a trawl of their subforums. It was not pretty. I'll stick to the book thread (which is my domain, mwahaha).
Oh gooood, that reminds me of all those strange way-too-personal threads people make in GC. RT's TMI thread on his problems with this girl whom he was sorta kinda interested in (read: he was desperate to get married) really had me in stitches.
You mean General Chatter? You exaggerate, I think. Looking at it, I see:
An anti gay marriage thread, where 90% of the posts are pro gay marriage.
A pro gay marriage thread, celebrating the fact that it is now legal in Sweden, where again 90% of the posts are pro gay marriage.
A thread on the monarchy, where 90% of the posts are the old Eurocommie crowd taking the piss out of each other.
A thread discussing dating single parents, which was actually pretty good-natured and interesting.
A 'diet club' thread.
A thread discussing the weather.
A couple of US politics threads.
A 'come to chat' thread.
A vanity thread.
An Israel thread.
With the exception of the current obsession with gay marriage, that could have been the list from Ran's GC forum at any time in the last five or six years...
all the threads you listed, none of them I want to read >_>;

Fair enough, I realise that GC at Ran's isn't everyone's cup of tea: but by definition, you can't 'jump the shark' if you're just doing what you've been doing all along. ;)
People do move on, on the other hand, and that's OK too. :)
I'm not sure there's ever really been a time (or only very rarely) where I've been interested in reading more than a small minority of the threads on any one day in General Chatter. I don't really feel like reading any of the threads on the front page of GC today, but that's not too unusual.
Like Wert and williamjm, I really bother with General Chatter. I check to see what threads on up, but I rarely read past the first page of any of them, let along post.
