salineaI've seen a lot of those pass, and I always wanted to do one, but they were always about subject I doubted I could... until finally this one! Yay! Ganked from laurus_nobilis
Your favourite character
Himemiya Anthy from Revolutionary Girl Utena.
One of the reason I love Anthy is because she's a character who play a lot of different roles, with a lot of lies and pretending, to the point that she may not know herself what is their true self. I enjoy that sense of layers and complexity. Also enjoy her as a character who is much stronger than the weak facade she appears as.
I love her quirky and kind of dorky sense of humour, when we do see her react genuinely, and as part of her passive aggressive revenge schemes against Nanami (and Saionji on occasion).
I also enjoy her for the way she’s a genre deconstructing character. She takes on the role of the damsel in distress, but is revealed to be a much more complicated character than that, because she’s also complicit to her victim-hood and to the victimisation of others as well as a victim – and I love that the fact she’s presented as spiteful also doesn’t mean she doesn’t deserve to be rescued. And the way that underneath those layers she’s someone in a state of deep and blasé desperation which we only see from times to times makes me feel for her. I also love her bravery when she was a little girl saving her brother and being punishing so outrageously for it. And I always have a fascinating with characters with the role of the Witch.
And even though she appears to be very passive on first watch, you realise she has actually a lot of subtle agency through the course of the story, organising most of the events of the duels with subtle manipulation and goading. And of course the ending is all about her claiming that agency openly, which I thought was pretty damn awesome.
I also really love when Nanami tells her she’s scary and she says “Doumo” with that ^_^ face. She’s got an amazing voice actress.
