Sexism In Sherlock

Yesterday, my husband and I rewatched Season 1 of Sherlock. It’s an awesome show, and one that was made even better by repeat viewing in all respects save one: the treatment of the women. I’ve blogged before, pointedly and with bitterness, about the terrible things Steven Moffat routinely does to his female characters in Doctor Who, and though his motives seem to stem more from ignorance than malice, the results are nonetheless unpleasant.

Early on, we’re introduced to Molly Hooper, Sherlock’s contact at the morgue. His obliviousness to her interest in him is played for laughs, which is fine and as it should be; what’s less fine is the way he consistently and cruelly criticises her appearance, which is also played for laughs.

And this is why I think Moriarty should have secretly been Molly.

But I wouldn't say "all respects save one", the Orientalism in "Blind Banker" was so over the top that at times I actually winced.

Oh that would have been awesome! Way to skew expectations in a clever way.

Agreed. I almost gave up on the series there.

I got my roommate hooked with the first episode. Before the second I told her that things were going to get stupid, so just bear with it and it will get better by the third. It felt like something written during the Yellow Peril era.

It's my fanon. Jim is just a prop with good acting skills, Molly's the one really behind it all.

I was so hoping for a Molly reveal myself! (I still harbour a faint hope that Mary Morstan in the Guy Ritchie-verse will turn out to be working for Moriarty somehow, it's a very faint hope but it's still there).

The Blind Baker is inexcusably awful, I try to ignore its existence.

all i have to contribute to this is that i love molly (she's my fave character on the show lol wat even) and that i don't think sherlock is oblivious to her interest in him. he knows and uses it to his advantage in the last episode. he just doesn't give a shit bc he's a dick.

i don't have my shirley holmes icon in this account. this is sad.

Of course he knows it. He up and seduces her in that one scene.

Just in case you're wondering who the hell just added you - you and I have a mutual LJ friend [livejournal.com profile] jiawen, and she asked if I knew you in this post (http://mle292.livejournal.com/1346688.html). I got here by looking to see if you appeared familiar by your posts.

I don't think that we know each other IRL, so I will not take any offense if you don't add me back (of course), but this post looked interesting and I added you so that your public posts end up in my feed.

I really liked Sherlock, but I completely agree that it had some Steven Moffat female problems.
