Huh. I thought the song was about fighting out of love for one's brothers-in-arms (and about the ultimate irony of that, because that love won't survive death in battle), rather than for any larger cause.
It's the closing lines that I get my interpretation from: "So come to me, come to me now, lay your arms around me--This is why, this is why we fight, come hell, come hell." I imagine there are other interpretations; that's just how I hear it.
