lazy and loving it
17 Dec 2007 10:09 pmHowdy. My first official day of unemployment started with realising the internet wasn't working at home x_x happily, the thing got rectified this evening.
In case anybody wonders, I am not currently reading any HP fanfics. I'm not sure when I'll get the taste back (if ever?) feel free to defriend me if that fandom was all that interested you in me >_>;;
On the other hand, I'm finding more and more joy in the small and quiet but lovely asoiaf fandom. Yeah, I do mean fanfics. Lots of them are surprisingly good and well characterized, for those of you who love the books, would be curious and didn't know :p Theon's my new favourite character to slash srsly.
In a fit of madness, I apparently volunteered to write a
ship_manifesto for Gerald/Damien. ^_^ That's going to be fun to do, even if there's an excellent essay on the ship out there which I can't surpass.

Words! I don't think GRRM hates fanfics, to his credit, I think he just doesn't think it's an appropriate way to learn the trade which is, well, condescending as hell, and kinda missing the point (lots of ficcers don't care for becoming profic writers), and rather goes against the way lots of people did learn the trade thanks. And yes, it's totally a way to do a commentary as well. Well. Fanfics are many things. The urge to narrate is one of the most primordial urge for people. That's a lot of what it is.
I agree with you on HP fics & essays. Most of the fun was the activity around it. While this is partly to JKR's credit in writing compelling character with just a few sketching lines, there's much to be said about the way a community can appropriate a text, any text, and use it as a basis for interpretation, socialization and creativity, and it's a wicked kind of fun. With ASOIAF, well, I don't think I would have enjoyed the novels as much either were it not for the amount of discussion I participated to, even though I already liked it a great deal.

Date: 17 December 2007 10:14 pm (UTC)as i say, if any other pairing intrigues you (I can vouch for Jaime/Arthur, for example, and there's plenty of Sandor/Sansa, Jaime/Brienne etc. around) the community is small but productive and as frequent in small fic community, the quality is good.

Date: 17 December 2007 10:12 pm (UTC)I guess "hate" was a bit strong. I can understand and appreciate TP's perception of fanfiction, not wanting to read it, so people won't start to say "you stole my ideas", because I totally see his point.
ETA: Re Theon. I think characters like Theon - little assholes - are lots of fun to write, because you can live out your own "assholish" tendencies and also have a jab at them.

The awful thing is I like Theon, even though I think he's an asshole. I actually feel sorry for him ^^. I haven't tried writing him and have no idea whether I'd like it for the reason you mention...
