I do adore Schmendrick, he's like the original clumsy wizard. He's adorable and sweet.
2) Is he/she important to the general plot?
Yes! No story without him because then the unicorn would never have become Amathea and she'd have gotten into the sea with the other unicorns.

I can feel sorry and relate with his yearning and his sense of failure, yes.

There's a TLU fandom?

Schmendrick/Molly OTP well they're so married to each others. It's canon in the short story too!

Nope.
