Bill Adama

At some point of watching nBSG, Adama had the dubious honour of overtaking my previous "most hated character" (which would have been Stannis Baratheon). I think it was "A Day in the Life" that clinched it, though I definitely didn't have much love for the man before.

He was fine until the S1 finale when the narrative made the mistake of not actually killing him (that would have so increased the tension! and send the message that the show had the guts to kill characters who weren't figurants, female or PoC!), but then he just increased in emo-manpain and "everything is always about me" level, and hypocrisy and self-righteousness; especially since unlike with Stannis Baratheon, whom the narrative knows is a gigantic asshole, the narrative seems to think Adama is God's gift to mankind. Seriously! And so many of the audience gobble it up! I remember with shudders the people who nominated Adama as a best father in fiction! What do people smoke? I'd rather have Tywin Lannister as a dad. At least you can safely hate him, whereas Adama always so manipulatively act as if any talking back to him is an act of deep betrayal that hurt him oh so much, the poor dear. Meanwhile, when Lee was trying to tell him his mother had been abusive to he and his brother as children, Adama fucking shut him up so as not to spoil his good memory of his wife. Fuck him. Of course Adama's not just a horrible father; he's also a pretty fucked up commander. He plays favourite to the people who suck up to him with his typical emotional manipulativeness all the time; and played a huge role in the endemic corruption of the power structure that ended up with the Mutiny. Not, of course, that the show would ever play fair (or coherently) with antagonism against their precious Adama and Roslyn (Roslyn mostly managed to stay on my good side by being smarter, and less hypocritical when she was being ruthless; though sometimes barely). And the whole of S4 was a painful, dull mess of wondering why the heck the show were expecting us to find his manpain touching. Yeah, yeah, Roslyn's death by is was totally about how tragic it is for you, Adama. Cry me a fucking river.

Adama was a terrible leader, and that's one of the reasons I loved the character so much. If people lionized him for some reason, I think that's a huge error -- it's because of his deep flaws that I liked him.

yeah, that point of view I can understand (though I still think the overall narrative of BSG was intentionnally one of praise, as a flawed but great man; than showing him for what he was).

What I like about BSG is that the way that it was set up tells us, right off the bat, that these are not the best and brightest. Galactica was a mothballed museum ship, and not the place where the fleet would send their best people. Or their second-best people. Probably their worst people, in fact -- which explains why the crew was so incredibly dysfunctional even before their entire universe was nuked by Cylons. Tigh was a drunk, Adama a disgrace, Starbuck an uncontrollable freak, etc.
