I believe I've reached the point when I'm not even looking forward to Games of Thrones episodes. I feels like a duty, and then I look forward to the discussion; but I actually stopped the last episode twice while watching from boredom and cringing. The OOCness is out of the wazoo. At least, the Tywin & Arya show, if wildly OCC, is very entertaining. And the Cersei & Sansa scene were slightly good. Wish I could say the same of the (finally!) Sandor/Sansa scene. And I guess Ygritte is sassy, yay?

Yeah, I'm also watching it for duty's sake, and this episode was sightly better than the previous two (leaving aside Daenery's story which only gets messier and messier).

I thought there was... one episode (i think it was the one of two weeks ago?) that I thought was mostly good but most of the others have been meh. I thought there was much more than Dany's story that has been messy (although hers is the worst, definitely). Theon's story is getting wrecked as well, Sansa's barely better (except I like what they're doing with Shae although it lacked in transition), Arya is good, Cat's keep getting her agency undermined by the plot adaptation, Robb's just... LOL, whatever. Not impressed with the changes to Jon's story either, asides from Ygritte being cool enough (if too pretty). Davos is mostly okay, Melisandre is even worse than in the book though. Not gonna comment on the Jaime thing because it pisses me off.

Hee! Yeah, I have been ranting about that all day. Yes, Jaime has no problem killing innocents; but no, Jaime doesn't calculatingly manipulate them beforehand.

the whole scene is wrong. And Jaime likes being hero worshipped too, so I don't think he'd do that to that guy. No to mention, wasn't he kin? Jaime killing a Lannister related? Yeah, no.

I couldn't understand the point of all that. Why would they even think of doing it?

well, it obviously set the plot point of Jaime killing a Karstark, thus getting their hatred; and suddenly increases the tension while Catelyn is in charge so that it'll make the decision to release him less her fault. And more screen time for the actor. Typical of the sort of things this series has been doing (badly).

Yes--but the book worked fine without it. I had to wonder if the "more screen time for the actor" was the point.

I think the reason I still watch is that I do like the way some of the characters embody the ones in the book--Arya and Tryion, and Ygritte. And I do like the changes in Shae. But Kate and Theon and Littlefinger are travesties. And Cersei...

Painful duty sounds about right. And OOC to the extreme o_O

I'm amused, because the TV show Tywin is pretty much my crack!fic default Tywin.

(If instead of dying he marries Shae who was Rhaenys all along, I called it.)

This has been a weaker season than the first. However, I'm not bothered by changes from the book when they work (or are better than what happened in the book; GRRM was hardly immune to providing facepalming moments ;-) ). The only characters I'm having big problems with are Littlefinger and Cat, not because they are OOC compared to the book but simply because the TV versions are inferior and less interesting than the book ones.

It's getting to the stage where every time Cat opens her mouth I'm expecting Robb or another guy to step in and say her lines for her. It's really baffling why they've weakened her character so much, especially as Michelle Fairley is doing a great job with the material she has been given.

Dany's story I'm torn on. On the one hand, she did need more to do. She's one of the poster characters for the series, so they couldn't leave her offscreen for 90% of the story, as in the book. Some of the ideas about changing her story in Qarth (and importantly they seem to be getting her to the same place as in the novels) seem fine, but the execution seems way off. Killing off most of her supporting cast also seems unnecessary, and I wonder if it was to keep the casting budget down for future seasons.

I wouldn't be disturbed by the changes from the book if they worked/were improvement. But I don't think they have? Like, okay, Tywin & Arya are extremely entertaining so from that PoV this at least works, but it's also OOC from what we know of Tywin already in the series (like the rape of Tysha) and stuff that should set up thing in the future (unless they change it) like the Reynes of Castamere or how he treated Cersei. Tywin is not indulgent to what he considers people giving him lip. Not even a cute, sharp tongued little girl who may or may not be Noble born. That's a fundemental part of his character. And if he thought she wasn't commoner, he'd look it into it (and then might not kill her when he punishes her for disrespect, but would still punish her harshly for it).

The rest of it... no, I don't think removing Reek from Theon's story is an improvement. Neither is the changes to Jon's story. (it just makes him look even more a fool that he was in the book). I appreciate trying to give Dany more to do; but all the scenes in Qarth have been a mess anyway. She looks childish and impotent and the actress seems to have only two notes to play emotionally. And they manage to make it seem even more racist than the books, which were already very problematic. I think you've covered Cat and Petyr already.
