5- Bill Adama (Battlestar Galactica) that "do not mistake this for approval" icon is brilliantly accurate. Nothing is ever good enough for Adama, and everything is always about how he feels.

4- Gendo Ikari (Evangelion) They've named the fictional award to bad father for him for a reason.

3- Ozai (Avatar the Last Airbender) to Azula as much as to Zuko

2- Tywin Lannister (A Song of Ice and Fire) for Tyrion and for Cersei especially, though I liked how the TV show high lightened to wasn't exactly perfect with Jaime either.

1- Gerald Tarrant (Coldfire trilogy) the most horrible thing is, he was probably a good father, until he, you know, murdered his children.

Adama is one of two characters I actually, genuinely HATE. I almost never hate fictional characters. But Adama really argh me.

I think Tywin's a dickbag to Jaime in the books, too, especially in Storm of Swords when he disowns him. (Then again, Tywin is pretty much the textbook definition of 'dickbag.' The only reason I can tolerate him more than I can tolerate Joffrey is that Tywin, for all that he's a horrible human being, can actually run a country.)

I blame Joff less, because he's a child. Tywin is able to run a country, pretty good at it even, which is tragic in a way - but he's also very able to ruin a country, as he did, very deliberately, with the Riverlands. He choses his monsters very purposefully for that aim.
OtoH he's a much, much more interesting character than Joffrey - Joff is very flat and boring, really.

...I... don't think that fits in my paradigm. "worst father in the history of fathers", which I am cosigning with all my heart. (Never saw Evangelion, but from what I hear I keep thinking that Ozai blows Gendo Ikari outta the planet. Ozai started with tiny!Zuko scared that his dad might kill him. Of course Azula is the one who put the idea in Zuko's mind, but still. Zuko was scared. That's actually Ozai at his best.)

Also I think one reason why Ozai is so horrible above all other horrible fathers is because of how young Azula and Zuko are. (admittedly he's the only one I really know on this list)

I also think that David Cain might be somewhere in my top five. Or if he's not it's because I don't find him an interesting character enough on his own, without taking his daughter into account. ...Is it wrong of me that I think Cain is a worse father than Deathstroke? I like Slade a lot as a character and I think that confuses my judgement.

Well #1 actually murdered his (two of) his children. (And hilariously, is actually the anti-hero of the story in question, and I love him dearly as a character).

#2, well if you really want to know what he did to rate as worse than Ozai, I can tell, it's kind of a horrible story though, so I'm warning first.

David Cain, I dunno, he's probably rate a place in a top 10 - as I said it kind of crack me up he didn't even make it; but I can actually believe that David Cain loved Cass, and more importantly Cass also believes it. She also believes he's proud of her (though it may be for all the wrong reasons). So in a way that makes him better than Ozai, Gendo, Adama & co.

I don't know enough about Slade to know how bad or not he is as a father tbh.

I'll need context to judge. Offspring-killing is much more common in fiction than you'd believe, and that's what makes things really horrible.

Ohahahaha, Slade is just... reallyreallyreally fucked up as a father. On the one hand, he clearly loves his children and he occasionally wants the best for them, even if the best includes being in the Titans. Otoh, he killed one of his sons, is part of the reason why his other son became mute, and put his daughter on crazy-making super-strength serum, before putting Kryptonite in the eye-socket from which she'd taken her own eye out in an attempt to get his approval (the sad part is he approved of her before). But he loves them and he'll raise hell if something happens to them and he cares about all of them as a family!

Oh, he's pretty lousy. All his kids either followed him into the mercenary life (at his encouragement, getting his first son killed), became a Teen Titan, or both. At one point he mind-controlled drugged his daughter Rose to switch from the Titan's side to his team (and she loses an eye as a result), and his history with his son Jericho is worse. At one point he realizes how trying to personally keep his kids safe keeps backfiring, and his response to that is to go after them to drive them away into the arms of the Titans and count on that team to protect them.

He's not the very worst, he does try and care for/help his kids most of the time, it's just that the ways he does it are so horrible that they often end up maimed, dead, or so on. Personally I'd take Cain over him.

Mudered his children's mother, forced Luke into exile on a godforsaken desert planet, particpated in the slaughter of his daughter's and his son's adoptive families, tortured his daughter, tried to kill his kids several times over, cut Luke's hand off, tortured his kid's friends....compared to Vader, Tywin's Father of the Year material.:p
